I applied for danforth but did NOT get in…

Not to be cynical, but any sort of “appeal” will just be scoffed at and addressed with a generic response. It’s a great school and most applicants are qualified but they can only accept a certain amount. You’ll get into another great school, don’t worry.

@Jaccrazzi: I’m pretty sure many who applied for the Danforth didn’t get in. Around 2500 applied for the Danforth. Obviously, all of them won’t be accepted.

@Happyasever Ahh, I didn’t know that many people applied! Makes sense then…

What type of merit scholarships exist? I was accepted but I haven’t really looked at anything yet.

Waitlisted

Kinda surprised, at least I can cross one off the list though. Already received likely letters to Harvard, Duke, and Penn so I’m in good shape.

@questlove: There are many merit scholarships but all of them require separate applications which were due Jan 15th. Also, more than 1500 apply for each of them and only around 10-12 end up getting them. It’s a total crapshot.

@gman45 You’re not the only one to get waitlisted to WashU but have received likely letters from other top schools (I’m not one of them haha). Why do you think that is?

Yeah I applied for 2 merit scholarships, both with 1000+ word essays, and did not get in. Idk if that proves/disproves any theories, but just thought I’d put it out there.

Likely letters from Harvard, Duke, and Penn? Which type of cancer did you cure?

I received a likely letter from Yale and REA acceptance to Stanford. I was also just accepted to Washington University. I was NOT chosen for the Annika Rodriguez Scholarship, but I did receive the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship. Go figure.

Questlove,

Post of the year! Another W/L here.

I am surprised at some of these. How do you get waitlisted with 2380 and 800s on 4 Subject Tests???

Also looks like everyone applied to the same 15 schools. See the same names on every single thread where D applied.

I’m so grateful for getting in, especially when so many other people with great stats did not get accepted.

@finalchild: Better question, how do you get flat out rejected with a 2280 and near 800s on two subject tests, along with a lot of volunteering and good leadership?

('Cause you’re looking at a rejectee right now. (;)

Wait listed only one from our school was admitted RD, one ED. Two W/L…hoping one of his other top schools come through. Doubt we’ll make our planned visit at the end of the month.

Congratulations to those who were accepted!!

thesmiter,

I don’t know. I know this happens every year and there are always these examples of almost perfect stats along with great ECs, and sometimes along with very strong interest shown, with these waitlist and reject outcomes.

I really do think there is just too much application overlap and Wash U is an easy app to throw in with virtually no supplement. Thank goodness my D refused my efforts to have her write essays to apply for a scholarship which I thought might help her chances to get in even though she would have been unlikely for a scholarship. She was smart enough to draw a line on unnecessary trauma.

And in terms of the app overlap, I’ve seen names here of kids who already have been admitted to Ivies or MIT or wherever and they still are keeping apps open at all of these other schools (Wash U, Michigan, Rochester, etc, etc) when you can bet they won’t be attending these other schools.

Don’t know what the solution is but there’s a problem.

I wish I applied ED. I can’t believe I was flat out rejected.
If I was WL’ed I would have done everything I could to show that Wash U was my first choice.

I’m just not as excited about the other schools I applied to.

I wish you could trade acceptances. :(

Questlove,

I have no research experience, and I’m still pretty surprised that my application stood out in those pools. I don’t have any major awards (NMF?) or hooks. I’m sure my 2400 helped, but there’s more than a few of those. I do have good leadership positions that stand out at my school, as well as strong recommendations and essays. But don’t assume that I’m someone who sold my soul to extracurriculars that would help me get into college.

P.S. I like your username

Sounds like we’re in the same boat! But seriously, congrats on all the likely letters :)

I’ve been pretty damn depressed for the past few hours but one of the previous posts in this thread inspired me to be a better sport. I think I felt almost entitled to an acceptance at WashU because I had the fitting stats, I visited, and most people I met on the visit made me feel like I was a shoe-in. However, two things are super true: 1. A ton of people apply to WashU for kicks because of the easy supplement, thereby watering down and homogenizing the applicant pool, and 2. The lack of an essay prevents a ton of deserving candidates from showing WashU a side of themselves that could well be their ticket to getting in. Maybe I’m overthinking this, but I’m just trying to rationalize it for myself and others. A hearty congrats goes out to those who were accepted, and good luck to those who were rejected or waitlisted. It’s time to move on.
