From most of what I've read on these boards, I get the impression that WashU's engineering program is not the greatest.

Right now, I'm deciding between WashU, Northwestern, and Vanderbilt as a Mechanical Engineering major.

I'm worried that WashU's program lacks in comparison to Northwestern's in terms of job placement. Can anyone, particularly past and current students, speak about this?

I understand that BME is good at WashU, but what about mechanical? Is job placement good? Are there many research/co-op opportunities?

I am a current senior in Mechanical Engineering at WashU so I will try to answer as best as I can. I have definitely had a great time during my four years at WashU. That doesn't mean that there weren't things I didn't like -- there were some classes that I didn't like and a few professors that weren't very good, but that will be similar no matter where you go.

I am going to grad school so it is harder for me to talk about job placement. For grad school placement, my friends and I all got into top programs (i.e. CMU, Standford, Berkeley). The school has at least two major career fairs each year with a lot of engineering opportunities. I got my job for this summer through one of the on campus interviews that the engineering school setup. Research/co-op opportunities are definitely available, and I would encourage you to participate. The people I know that got really good jobs were all involved in some extra-curricular project (the nanosatellite project, the Formula SAE racecar, or researching in a lab).

That's all I can think of for now. PM me if you want more specific info.

kinyo,
are you saying that because WashU is ranked relatively lower than the rest of the schools? I think WashU is rather underrated in terms of engineering. and plus, the only thing that the USNews ranks is the national colleges, not the engineering schools specifically. Engineering schools were ranked purely on peer assessment.

Chanyxp,
I'm posing this question for two reasons:
1. WashU's engineering program is relatively low in the rankings
2. I've heard that there are many problems within the engineering department at WashU right now

Also, in terms of difficulty, how strenuous would you guys consider the engineering route at WashU?
