Decision: Waitlisted CAS

Objective:

  • [] SAT I: 2170; M: 750, CR: 710, W: 710
    [
    ] ACT: Did not submit
    [] SAT II: 780 Biology E; 710 Math I (smh)
    [
] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): No idea, 3.9? W: 4.48 (accumulated over the three years and not including this year)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): No idea
    [
    ] AP scores: Biology 4; US History: 4, English&Comp: 4
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP EURO, AP English Lit, AP Calc AB, Anatomy Honors, Spanish V Honors, Christianity theology
    [
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):N/A Unless winning a National Silver Medals in photography for Scholastic Arts and Writing counts.

Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Research assistant at Immunology and Rheumatology for major hospital; New England Journal of Medicine IT assistant; Field Hockey Club and Varsity Field hockey; Newspaper co-editor in chief; Student Council; Vice President; School clubs
[
] Essays: 10/10. I think my essay was my saving grace. I wrote an entirely different essay after my ED rejection.
[ ] Teacher Recommendations: Current AP Lit teacher really likes me (we have lunch together and always chat): 10/10; Junior pre-calc teacher: 8/10 She liked me, but did not know me as well as my other teacher. She has written a bunch of recommendations for me though.
[
] Counselor Rec: 8/10 She likes me but we did not really get to know each other, so I’m sure it was mundane. My school only has one counselor.
[li] Interview:Did not request an interview in time. [/ul] [/li]
Other

[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): MA
[
] School Type: Small Christian Private
[] Ethnicity: Korean-American
[
] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Upper middle class
[
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):None [/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: ECs perhaps, Essays
[
] Weaknesses: SAT I and SAT II scores; Mediocre asian–I mean let’s be real.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I did not show any interests because I could not visit the campus, and I did not request an interview. Also my SAT scores are a big indicator.
[
] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Wellesley (Likely); Rejected: Pomona ED; Now I need to wait to hear from other schools. But I have completed the trifecta: Acceptance, Waitlisted, Denied. [/ul]

General Comments: I was surprised to even be waitlisted given how low my standardized test scores. I think other aspects of my application allowed me to get on the waitlist. Good luck to everyone else and their own endeavors!

[] Weaknesses: Did not list APs (a four and two threes), GPA isnt outstanding for WashU, Counselor rec, Mid-year was only so-so
[

[*]General Comments:** Not particularly surprised or disappointed, was not very likely I ended up here. Show a ton of interest if you really want to go here (that means emailing/calling, etc every month or so), but know that even if you do you easily could still not get in.

Volunteer/Community service: 100-120 hours over the last three summers at a horseback riding camp for children with disabilities
Summer Activities: College class in ASL at Rutgers, Volunteering
Essays: Common App Essay: About challenging people’s beliefs by being physically strong. It focused on my ability to do a lot of push-ups even though I’m a petite, nerdy girl. It was kind of humorous, and I spent a long time on it. Everyone who read it liked it. 9/10
Teacher Recommendation 1: Not sure. I picked this teacher because he saw me help out other students in his class, but it’s impossible for me to say if he wrote a lot about that in his rec.
Teacher Recommendation 2: I think it was pretty good. I gave him a lot of supplementary material to pull from, and him and I kind of jived in class.
Counselor Rec: She likes me, but it was probably kind of bland. She has 239 other kids to worry about.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: N/A
Interest: Moderate - I applied last minute and didn’t apply for any scholarships, but I went to an information session at my school, visited them at a college fair, and I’ve been on their mailing list since early junior year.

Reflection

Strengths: Scores, GPA, significant achievement in one EC
Weaknesses: Course rigor was only ok, only one significant EC
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Maybe they like girls who do push-ups? I think it helped that not a lot of other kids from my school applied

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Rutgers and the University of Alabama, deferred at UVa
General Comments:

So incredibly grateful and excited - I don’t feel like I deserve this! Given that I was expecting a WL, the acceptance is amazing, but the fly out offer really floored me. I never expected I would be offered a fly out anywhere. No clue why they offered, I’m not a URM or from an underrepresented state or first gen or even low income, but it’s going to make the next two weeks of waiting feel a little better. Congrats to everyone who got in, and to everyone who got waitlisted, I hope May is good to you, and if you got rejected, as they say, there are far greater things ahead than any we leave behind.

[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted early to Georgetown, accepted to honors college at ASU, applied to Columbia, Yale, Brown, UPenn, Berkeley, UCSD[/li]General Comments: What a pleasant surprise! I didn’t know decisions were coming out today, so when I checked my email I had a mini heart attack! I didn’t think I had a shot during regular admissions, so I’m pretty happy!

I’m pretty bummed right now so I’ll post detailed stats later, but I was on target statswise (33 ACT, 3.84 GPA, top 2% of class, passionate about unique extracurriculars), not extremely high so I thought I would be exempted from the tufts syndrome, showed a lot of interest (visited, interviewed, applied RD in november, applied for scholarships)… yet I was waitlisted :frowning: maybe because I’m asian?
