@thoughtbubbles @Ambitious19 I did as well, will you guys be attending?
Yes, S did; however, it is the same weekend as MIT CPW which he already signed up for.
@ccheennaa I’m probably going but my mom is super iffy about it because I’ll already be missing 3 days of school for Penn’s Quaker Days and Wellesley’s Spring Open Campus and my grades in AP Calc and Bio are not the best right now lol so I’m trying to persuade her to let me miss another 2 days of school!

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Everything I’ve done in hs has been consistent. I am passionate about my research and that shows in my essays and in my activities! Being published was also a plus.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: University of Virginia, waiting to hear back from other schools
Mine says that also! 1,650 out of 29,000. Themiah06 isn’t kidding.
They took the numbers from the acceptance letter which gave class size and number of applications
@IndigoSkies that makes me feel a little better about getting waitlisted… Washington U’s admissions seem to be somewhat random, but with a clear preference for demonstrated interest. A genuine congratulations to all that were accepted though! You’re part of the 5%, and that’s no small feat.
@Frazzled503 Agreed. Very impressive, all of you. You’ll do well.
@Frazzled503 I got waistlisted too… you think we have chances to get in finally??
@leahleah sometimes they draw from the waitlist, sometimes they don’t. I would say that the number of applicants on the waitlist offered admission will be anywhere between zero and 300 out of ~3,000, so somewhere between 0% and 10%. Those are really rough estimates though, and the waitlist pool is very competitive, so we have a chance but I certainly wouldn’t count on being offered admission.
Decision: Accepted CAS
Objective:
[ul]
[] SAT I: 2300. Reading 800, Math 770, Writing 730
[] ACT: 33
[] SAT II: Math II 780, Spanish 750, Chemistry 690
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1 of 115
[] AP scores: Calculus AB 5 (self studied, school doesn’t offer APs)
[] Senior Year Course Load: Band, Spanish 3 (highest offered), Chemistry 2 (highest offered), College Composition English 4 (highest offered), Independent and ungraded math stuff (I took Calculus online last year, which is the highest math offered), JROTC, Biology 2 (highest offered)
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit finalist, National Historic Recognition Program [/ul]
Subjective:
[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Beta club treasurer; StuCo Senior secretary; JROTC Rifle Team Captain; JROTC Battalion Commander; Scholar Bowl four year varsity, all-conference, and all-district; Drama Club; JROTC Color and Honor Guards;
[] Job/Work Experience: Janitor job after school
[] Volunteer/Community service: Color and Honor Guards with JROTC
[] Essays: My Common App essay was about my experience at the Missouri Scholars Academy and how much it grew my view of the world. I talked a lot about how much the passionate and academic environment contrasted with my small rural town. 8/10
[] Teacher Recommendations: Didn’t read, but probably fantastic. I’ve known both for a long while now. They’re the best.
[] Counselor Rec: My school very rarely has applicants to top colleges, and almost never has anyone accepted, so she might have put some good effort into it. However, she’s pretty stretched, so it may have been generic. [/ul]

[] State (if domestic applicant): Missouri
[] School Type: Public, Rural
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $75,000 - $100,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, possibly being from a small town? [/ul]
Reflection
[ul]
[] Strengths: Strong scores, grades, and rank. Teacher recs. I think I showed some good initiative by going beyond what my school offers. Also, I have a feeling that JROTC and Rifle Team don’t crop up in the applicant pool too often. And being a URM. In addition, I attended Discovery Weekend.
[] Weaknesses: Very little community service, no big thing that stands out like doing research, founding clubs, or starting charities. My high school is a standard academically weak and underfunded rural school.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m pretty strong all around, have some uncommon ECs, and demonstrated interest. I remember when during Discovery Weekend they mentioned that they were seeking to increase the Hispanic presence on campus. No telling how much that helped.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: University of Missouri - Columbia, Harvard (likely letter), Columbia in NYC (likely letter), WashU
Waiting: Yale (deferred SCEA), Princeton, Brown, UPenn, Tufts [/ul]
**General Comments: Although it looks like I won’t be going to WashU, congratulations to everyone admitted! I absolutely fell in love with WashU during Discovery Weekend and am sure that everyone who attends there next year will have a fantastic time. I’m holding out for Yale, but if I’m not freezing my butt off in New Haven, I’ll be doing it in Cambridge. **

@Frazzled503 @wshsmom @IndigoSkies @themiah06
Yeah it’s not a 5 percent acceptance rate. They are just telling you they have that many spots and that many people applied. But of course since they want to fill every spot, they’ll admit more than can fit. So in reality although there are that many spots, WUSTL has a yield of about 30% so multiple that number by about three to get the real acceptance rate of about 15% which is consistent with the past few years.
Colleges always state acceptance rates that way to sound more selective, but that’s not the acceptance rate. About 4,000+ students were accepted.

@cheennaa True, but I wasn’t claiming that the overall acceptance rate is 5%, just that it was around 5% for that RD round. The ED acceptance rate must have been much higher and some people will likely be taken off the waitlist, raising the overall acceptance rate significantly.

@collegeman5 Where did 1,650 out of 29,000 come from then?
@Frazzled503 1650 is the number of spots in the freshman class. WUSTL will admit more than 1650 b/c obviously not everyone who gets in will go; in fact, around only 35% will. Doing the math, WUSTL will admit around 4500-5000 - yielding about a 16% acceptance rate.
