This choice is reallllly difficult. Being from the East Coast, I have a bit of a bias and don't know all that much about how Wash U is perceived in other parts of the country (here it's virtually unknown).

Could anyone offer insight into these two schools?

I'm majoring in biology and hope to attend medical school, by the way.

Med school will set you back $200k+. Go to the least expensive, hoard your dollars, and if you also got into a good state honors program, go to that one.

I applied early to Penn. I got rejected. I will be attending WUSTL in the fall, and I don’t know why I ever applied to Penn early; it was not really what I was looking for in a college.

+'s/-'s for me:
Penn:
+Beautiful Campus, Ivy League Status, Great Academics, Well-Rounded Student Body, Balanced Academic/Social Scene
-Located in the Middle of Philly (and not the safest part). (I am from a Philly suburb, by the way, and actually Wash U is just as prestigious in my school as Penn), Probably More Competitive Than I Would Have Liked, Probably a Tad Too Party-ish for Me

WUSTL:
+Beautiful Campus, Well-Known by Who Matters, Great Academics, Well-Rounded Student Body, Academics Are Always First (Not being an Ivy school helps in this regard; judge me as you will), In a Safe Suburban Area (contradictory to those who think it’s actually in the city of St. Louis), Competitive with YOURSELF, not others (although Premeds have it tough anywhere).
-Not as prestigious among commonfolk, ummmm, I don’t know what else… hehe.

And for med school, you seriously could do MUCH worse than WUSTL; it is highly respected in the field… I think something like 80% of graduates in Premed go to med school (don’t quote me on that).
Just my 0.02 cents.
