Hi~~everyone!
My ED will go to either Wustl or Rice, but I'm just not sure which is a better choice,so I want you guys to compare them for me.Here's sth. about me:
1.international
2.in need of financial aid
3.extremely good scores+good essay(s)+good rec(s)+okay EC

I'd like to know:
1. the acceptance rate of ED of each school
2. which ED do you think can increase my chance
3. any comparison

I'd go with Rice, a much better school overall, unless you are focused on medicine -- the Rice/Baylor program is very tough to get into, better chances at WUSTL.

Ok...we looked at both...ultimately decided on WashU because of the flexibility of double/triple/crossmajoring etc.....
Rice-cheaper, easier to get admitted, more internationals(16%), if you get Rice/Baylor(guaranteed medical school acceptance--very hard to get)
WashU-easier to double major and/take courses across colleges/schools including music school etc..., applying Early is a big help, harder to get in especially if applying RD.
Both are great schools...you can't go wrong either way.

thankyou.
I know both are great,so what I care about is not which school is better, but which ED will increase my chance better...
I have made up my mind-------wustl,coz rice doesn't have financial aid for intl..
thank you so much

Rice, statistically speaking, is a lot harder to get into...from my school you need to have a 3.93 GPA and 2350, looking from past accepted applicants.

WashU, in comparison, is easier to get into.

With that said, both universities are good in their own respects - WashU is well known for medicine, and Rice is well known in engineering and architecture. Depending what major or profession you are looking into, then one school will be better for you than the other.

The only statement I disagree with is that Rice is "easier" to get into than WashU. That is just so dead wrong. I don't know that much about WashU other than that its med school is #2 or #3 right behind JHU and Harvard Medical School, but I do know Rice is comparable to Duke and the most, or second most, prestigious school in the south and it is overall an excellent school with a very reasonable pricetag, a "best buy" marked by many college guides and described as a "hidden gem."

At the same time, if you are considering applying ED to either school, I am not so familiar with Rice's peculiarities, but I do know that WashU is extremely preoccupied with your demonstrated interest: they are huge on it and you really need to show them you love them and want to go there, they love that kind of stuff.

I got into Rice and Wash U, but chose Wash U for medicine. Both are great schools, like you said. To put this into a broader perspective, I also got into Brown and Northwestern, and got waitlisted at Duke and Dartmouth. A lot of my friends ask me why I chose Wash U, but there's so many factors that made me want to go there that I can't explain them all (money is not one of them).

Wash U is tied with Columbia as 6th in terms of selectivity. Both Wash U and Rice are so selective that I think it's foolish to compare the two. Obviously, schools like Harvard are more "selective" (maybe based on factors other than merit, however this brings up another debate entirely).

However, I don't see why selectivity is related to the quality of the education you can get? Some schools can be comparatively easier to get into but can still offer a solid educational experience, Georgia Tech for example. Obviously, different colleges suit different peoples' needs.

P.S.

I'm not trying to pick apart your every argument, I understand you are probably knowledgeable about academic institutions, but how exactly does this quote show that you understand anything at all about Wash U's admissions? Rice may be selective, but that doesn't prove that Wash U is more, less, or equally as selective.

Ok ...didn't mean to start anything with the "easier to get into"...I was just going by the number of applications vs number accepted at each school....and the princeton review selectivity ranking---where WashU is ranked very high. Both schools are very good--equal education---and obviously not "easy" to get in, both are very HARD to get into...as with any top school, no one has a guanteed admittance --no matter what scores you have etc...That's why D applied to both....she would have been happy at either(or any school of the 5 she applied to), luckily she had a nice selection of schools to decide from in the end.

I think comparing Wash U to Rice is like comparing apples to oranges. They are so totally different. For example Rice is in Texas and Wash U is in Missouri. I believe Rice has less students than Wash U. I might be wrong, but isn't Wash U more selective than Rice. I personally would choose Wash U over Rice.

Another anecdotal story: D. accepted to Rice Architecture, waitlisted at Wash U. So who knows! Supposedly Rice is one of the top Architecture schools.

We've been to both schools several times over the course of several student searches with different fields of study. Actually they seem very similar to me: National Reputations, Research Universities, Undergraduate Focus, Beautiful Campus set in a primarily upscale Urban environment, near a major city park, etc. Rice has the Residential college system. Wash U. is slightly larger. There are numerous small differences which may or may not be decision makers, but in general, they seemed more alike than different.

Wonder123 you probably didn't get into WashU because you were too poor to visit, which they took as apathy towards WashU. I would personally choose WashU over Rice because it's a bigger school so more people to mingle with. Also, I don't like D-IA schools, since there's always those stupid jocks.
