This year I was accepted into both WUSTL and Michigan, and I'm having a bit of trouble deciding. I'd really like to go to WashU, since its pre-med program seems to be better and I like its campus a lot more, but U of M is in-state, much cheaper, and offers better alternatives if medical school does not work out.

I plan on majoring in chemistry and perhaps minoring in biology/neuroscience/public health. Opportunities to do medical research, gain clinical experience, shadow doctors, and volunteer are very important to me. I'd prefer a less competitive/more laid-back environment. Sports don't matter that much to me, as long as there is access to workout equipment and intramural teams. So far, I've only received the National Merit Scholarship for $2500.

If you are looking for a laid back/non competitive atmosphere, I would stray away from WUSTL. WUSTL is amazing for premed but it is also notoriously challenging and cutthroat. Let me reiterate, WUSTL is one of the best premed universities in the country, but it is difficult.

Michigan is pretty strong in premed. In general it wont be as competitive and probably not quite as difficult to maintain a high GPA. That being said, premed at Michigan isn’t going to be a walk in the park either.

I think it would be hard to pass up Michigan for instate, but I can see WUSTL’s appeal too.
