WVU Acceptance but no merit or Engineering College acceptance?

Anyone else get their WVU acceptance yet? Have you found your merit scholarship amount? Or Engineering college acceptance?

My son’s WVU acceptance came a few weeks ago, but it’s only acceptance into the university. We can’t find the merit/scholarship info yet, and it doesn’t say he was accepted into the Engineering school.

He’s emailed his admissions counselor but didn’t hear back from her.

We know what his merit should be based on the chart, and we know he should get into the Engineering school based on stats. But frustrating that it isn’t official yet.

He’s hoping to commit by Oct 1st for housing priority, but obviously can’t until this info is available.

TIA!

So assuming it all works out - you’ve decided !! Good for him.

I’m assuming the acceptance letter didn’t allude to any of what you’re asking - time frame wise…

I’d call admissions in the AM. No response - have to call. It happens. You’ll likely get the info you need very quickly.

Glad he’s decided on a home and nice and early. So you won’t apply to Reno and the others ?

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately none of this info was referenced in the acceptance email, or or the portal he now has access to. We will call tomorrow and hopefully get some info!

He’s probably 95% sure he’ll attend WVU, but still applying to Reno, SDSM, Missouri S&T, Penn State, University of Arizona, and a few other schools. We’ll have to wait for all the financial information to come in before making a final decision, but it makes sense to commit to WVU early regardless. I believe most of the deposit is refundable if he changes his mind. He’s also heading out to WVU at the end of the month for the Engineering Open House. It should help him make his mind up. Such a shame that the other mining schools are so far away and not really feasible to visit at this time!

I guess that’s where mining is.

It’s one of those things - we wasted 3 housing deposits - they get you.

Hopefully they’ll answer you tomorrow - it’s likely - on its way in the near future type thing.

Did you look at Kentucky? It’s a bit closer.

It’s nice to have that one in the bag - and hopefully he’s sold on the open house!! Or - he’s like - oh crap, I hate it here. Either way works!!!

Thanks! We did look at Kentucky, but DS thinks their mining curriculum focuses more on coal, which he’s not interested in.

I have a pretty major concern that DS won’t like the math-heavy classes in Mining Engineering. Not sure if you’ve seen my other threads, but I suspect there’s a chance he might not make it through, while keeping the GPA required for merit scholarships. We’ve been looking into Engineering Technology, which has far less math. He’s interested in this major, but wants to give mining a shot, which I completely support. But it would be REALLY nice if the school he chooses has both majors, in case he needs to switch. WVU does. It just started a new set of Engineering Technology majors this year. Many options! I keep looking for different schools for him to apply to, but I just don’t think we’re going to beat WVU.

Yes, I know you have that concern (I respond on all yours - ha) - and I know you were looking at engineering technology.

I personally think - you have to let kids chase their desires. In some ways, you don’t come across too many that have that desire - let alone from NJ (I think that’s where you’re from). Fortunately, WVU will have many majors to choose from - even with their cuts. But perhaps your son will surprise!! Hopefully he will. I wonder how many engineering qualified kids might actually better enjoy the technology major - but don’t pursue it because they see it as lesser.

It’s great you are letting him pursue his goal - but without wrecking his confidence, yes, it’s good to have the back up

One thing that you might add to your list if you haven’t is - what is the probation for missing the GPA and merit. At my son’s school, it was very generous - you could lose money but it would be hard to - so you want to make sure there’s a significant probation time, etc.

One advantage of - for example - School of Mines is - COA is under $30K - so that consideration is eliminated. Bonus - it’s in Rapid City - you have no idea (unless you’ve been there how awesome that is). I guess the question is - do they have a fallback for him if he decides the engineering isn’t worth it.

Hopefully your son gets right into the tutoring center wherever he goes!!

That he’s going to college is a great thing - and while we can paralyze ourselves with analysis, hopefully if he has a good head, one way or another it will all work out.
