I'm a rising female senior and am interested in running xc for DIII schools on my college list. I just started running xc last year. My best time is 20:08. I was just wondering if it is too late to get recruited. Should I still fill out the recruiting questionnaires? It's already August and the season starts in less than a month. Are coaches still looking for runners at this time? Thanks!

No, it’s not too late. Are you looking for admissions support or do you just want to see about walking on a D3 program?

I was actually thinking about walking on. What are the benefits of being a recruit as opposed to just a walk on? I just filled out two questionnaires yesterday. What’s the next step?

Well, at a selective D3 being recruited can help you get though admissions. If you don’t foresee much difficulty in being admitted - you can email the coach anytime and tell him you’re interested in running. He’ll take it from there and let you know the kind of times he likes to see.

The d3 colleges on my list are uchicago, nyu, and carnegie mellon.

Oops posted that before I finished typing! Haha so in my email to the coaches, should I just say that I’m interested in running for their college? Anything else I should include? Also, my coach said that if I gave her their emails she would talk to them. I should email them first right

okay, those are all selective schools. I don’t know how much influence the coach has with admissions at those programs.
But yes, start with an email telling him your PR’s as well as test scores, GPA, etc. You might want to mention you’ve only been running for a year - that indicates good upside potential. You can also include your coach’s contact info.

Thanks varska for all the help and info! I will email them tonight

Yea, it’s definitely not too late. I submitted questionnaire forms as early as June and as late as November. Even though it’s “the earlier the better,” if a school wants you, they’ll do their best to make sure you apply, even if it’s right before the application deadline.

I was a DIII track recruit for similar schools last year. So if you have any specific questions about the process, feel free to PM me.

Thanks Kali22 I will definitely contact you if I have more questions
