I'm an international applicant here, and so i dunno much about Texas and Texans.. Are Texans xenophobic? Don't reprimand me for asking this.. I'm just ignorant here.. How's the Texan weather? Hot ALL YEAR round?.. Do we seriously need a car to move around outside campus?.. Thanks..

Are Texans xenophobic? I'm not entirely sure, but probably no moreso than the average U.S. citizen, which is not bad at all. Are Rice affiliates xenophobic? Not in the slightest! And this is what really matters because you will spend probably 95+% of your waking time on campus.

Texas weather is warm all year round, and HOT in the summers (which only overlaps with the school year for a couple of months at the most). Winter weather isn't as warm (some may say cold, but compared to the Northeast, it's gorgeous).

Do you need a car? Absolutely not!! Few freshmen have cars (though they are allowed on campus); Rice students have free access to the LightRail, which is the public transportation in Houston and has a stop right outside Rice. Plus there are plenty of amenities withing walking distance. And for everything else you can just bum a ride off a friend. And even still, it doesn't matter much because you can stay on campus without leaving for weeks if you want.

Well, I can't speak for all Texans, but Houston is NOT xenophobic. On the contrary, Houston is an incredibly diverse multicultural city. Many residents grew up in other cities, states, countries, and all are welcome and included and welcomed.

Thanks a lot. That puts me at ease and i can now apply without any reservations.. Does anyone know the admission rate for internationals?..

Oh yea.. Is safety an issue in both Rice and Houston?.. Thanks..

There are parts of Houston were safety is a serious concern. Thankfully the areas around Rice are very high class and low crime (it's the "nice" side of town). The campus is also extremely safe: blue lights, RUPD, etc.

Great.. Thanks a lot.. I hope i've considered most of the things for college..

I was an international when I applied, btw.

Are Texans xenophobic? absolutely NOT, if anything, they welcome internationals with open arms. we at rice love to meet new people every day, especially those who are from out of the country! Just know that you will probably be bombarded with details from your home country.

How's the Texan weather? SO HOT, but it has its cold times. For instance, today highs were in the low 80s and lows were in the low 60s. But generally, it's only super hot when school starts & ends...but it's not the heat that gets to you, it's the humidity.

Do we seriously need a car to move around outside campus? NO! But...houston IS the 4th largest city in the united states. that said, if you wish to travel at your own leisure and frequently, a car is necessary.

hope this helped!
