X'mas Holiday

I saw the calendar of 2011 says that the x'mas break is at the 24th and 25th of December, and the New Year's break is on the 30th and the 31st. Which technically makes them 4 day breaks because of the week ends. But I also heard from a friend that once Finals are over you can pretty much leave school and come back next quarter, is that true?

I fly back and forth from UCSD to home so I would want to know the exact timing of the break so I can buy my tickets soon. :3

My last thread has no replies so I thought I should rephrase my question and try again.

I assume we are out from your last day of finals until 1st day of Winter quarter (1/3/11). I need to book flights too.

I don’t know why UCSD put that. The break is from Dec 11th-Jan 3rd. Or really, whenever your last final ends to Jan 3rd when classes start.

Oho, so maybe that strange calendar was for the staff?

Students living in residential halls need to leave campus by evening Dec.11.
They can come back on Jan.2 (Sunday at 10 am).
However I don’t know if we have to take everything with us.
I hope I can leave a refrigerator and microwave in my dorm.

^No you leave everything in your room, you just take home clothes and computer basically

Dude, there’s no need to make a new thread. $KingsElite$ answered your question in the previous thread. The link you posted here:[Academic and Administrative Calendar 2010-2011](Academic and Administrative Calendar 2010-2011) states the dates that the UCSD administration has days off. If you want to stay at school even when you don’t have classes, it’s your call.

If you live in dorms, you are forced to vacate them during winter break and spring break. I believe you are allowed to stay if you live in apartments. And no, you don’t have to take everything with you unless you want to (or don’t pay your bills).

Gah. I didn’t realize it was answered! Sorry for populating the forum with unnecessary threads then. And thx seniordf, ucsandiego915, and Hinderman. Now I know when to book my flights.

Are we allowed to stay in the dorms over Thanksgiving weekend? An upperclassmen at orientation told me it wasn’t allowed, but that just sounded a little too ridiculous…

^You definitely are, but why would you want to? First of all it’s THANKSGIVING, you should want to be with your family for that. and Second of all pretty much everyone leaves and the dining halls close, UCSD becomes a ghost town. I stayed until Thursday and was the only person left in my suite and seemingly one of five people left in ERC. Trust, you don’t want to stay.

I wonder about people sometimes…

My family has never celebrated Thanksgiving… It’s just not a really big deal to me/us. Thank you for your quick replies though!

At least go to a friend’s house nearby or something, you DO NOT want to be the only one on campus during that time.

^They won’t be the only person on campus staying. I knew a couple people staying that were just on my floor so I’m guessing across the entire campus there’s more than nobody staying. Needless to say, you’ll probably be bored.

Can anyone recommend a shuttle that goes from UCSD to the San Diego airport? About how long does it take to get there? How much does it cost, and do you have to make reservations in advance? Thanks!

^For Christmas? I always take the bus. It’s long as hell, but it’s free with your ID card.

For Thanksgiving (but will probably need for Christmas too). What is “long as hell” lol? My last class on Wednesday is 3:50 pm and my flight is 7:15 pm.

^Well, on the weekdays it’s around 30 minutes, so not that bad. But on the weekends, because they had to be as destructive to the bus schedules as possible, you’ll have to take the trolley from downtown San Diego to the Old Town Transit Center to take the 30 to campus. It takes over an hour.

So since there won’t be classes on Thursday & Friday, how will discussions work for the week? If you have your discussion on one of those two days, are you expected to go to a different discussion sometime earlier in the week? Or does the professor cancel all the discussions for the week?

^If I remember correctly, all discussion sections were canceled that week. Maybe it varies by professor. Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.
