Would you all suggest home or pro for a 'college laptop'?

Trying to keep the cost down as much as possible.

Trying to keep the cost down as much as possible.

I always go pro... but it doesnt really matter....

Pro. It is more expensive but it's what your school will want you to have.

Pro has some neat password protection on networkword files and it allows you to access your computer from the internet while you're away.

If it's just for college I would pass, but it makes a good general home computer.

May I suggest going to Windows 2000. It's pretty stable, quicker, has a lot of the same features as XP Pro, and doesn't look like Playskool.

How about OS 9 and Virtual PC?

Windows NT(odds on favorite for short-sleeved IT guys)...

XP Pro has a few more network features that makes setting it up at school eaiser. If you have XP Home, no problems for you at all.

I do not think Pro is worth it unless you have a small business or corporation. I actually would get neither and get XP media or wait until January to get the new one, Microsoft VISTA.

I think it would be foolish to wait for Vista. I'd say get Media Center, but otherwise, get Pro. It's just a lot better than Home, and is much more useful for networking and troubleshooting and tweaking things.

XP - Home or Pro - whichever the school recommends - check their website first - and purchase it thru the school - big discount - if you don't already have it.

Dell XPS is not an operating system. Sean, sometimes, I don't know if your just flat out dumb, or if your a troll. Your in 9th grade. Please stay out of the college forums unless you have something worth our time.

Well, generally the two go hand in hand.

ftw!

Theres a dell xps laptop look it up idiot!!!

The thread is about comparing Windows XP to Windows Pro OPERATING SYSTEMS. Not Windows XP/Pro to Dell XPS LAPTOPS.

Operating Systems:
Windows: XP, XP Pro, 2000, 98, etc
Apple OS X
Linux distros

Not an Operating System:
Dell
HP
Compaq
Sony

I mean, if you want the best, most secure, most configurable and cheapest, OS out there I would go with DSL (Damn Small Linux). I'm also fond of OS X since it's based on the linux kernel. But for basic web surfing (facebook, cc, myspace, ect), word processing, music, chat, e-mail, save yourself some time and get XP home. It will last for 4 years and microsoft is usually good with the updates.

This applies to liberal arts majors only, if you’re an engineer or something tune this post out.

hahahaha...dell....haha you guys kill me

Most schools have the ''required'' - ''recommended'' computer needs posted somewhere on their web site - usually even by what major will require what - so I would at least consider checking the schools info as well. Engineering/graphic art/art majors - some others as well - will require more than just the standard recommended op sysems/soft-ware. Definitely worth a look-see or t/c.

So for that kids 'college laptop' - check the school info and go from there. Most of the time you can also purchase the required/recommended software at a significant discount thru the school as well.

Another tip - students can purchase iPod's at a discount thru the schools as well - for the unusual kid who does not have one - I know few who don't have one LOL.

or you could wait till january and get windows vista when it comes out

some places offer you a free vista upgrade certificate....when vista comes out you just go back to the store you bought it from and get that...but I think you have to buy professional at those places to get the free upgrade
