Y did they take so many ppl this year?!

Why did some UC's take so many students this year? I mean... I have people at my school not even in the top 10% going to UCLA and Cal. I know one guy who took 1 AP, failed it, took it twice at CC and is going to CAL (I think as an athlete). but wow... I can't explain my hurt, dissapointment, and frustration. I worked so hard to get to the school i'm going to.... but what the heck@?! they took like 20-30 other students from my school...

Me: 2290 (once). 4.4 - 11 AP's
Some others at my school: 2010, 4.01, 3 ap's... and we're still going to the smae school. (To give u the range. the top val's gpa was 4.67)

i'm not "bragging", but there is a HUGE contrast. A lot of people with weak gpas (4.0-4.1W) and low SATs/few EC-s all got in. Is it like that at your school too?? If I knew that 20-30 students with that low gpas were going to get in to the same school... why did I have to work so hard. This is unbelievably disappointing and furstratingW

hmmm...all this proves is that you think you are better than others....

nice outlook on life there, buddy :)
*on another note, a 4.0 is NOt IN ANY WAY a weak GPA, that is DEFINITELY enough to get almost any A resident into UCLA/Berk.

you got into your dream school, you should be happy.

get over it, thats why you don't choose a college so you can show off to your friends.........

yah, i must agree you do sound extremely pompous && you shouldn't care how many people got in unless you're more concerned about you getting into an elite college than the quality of education you're getting

^^^^...ouch

4.0 bad?

The cds says cal's average gpa is a 3.9.

Get over yourself.

"A lot of people with weak gpas (4.0-4.1W)"

Fake post? Hopefully?

I think he's just too used to getting high grades that 4.0s have become inferior to him and all the people that get them are inferior as well.

Sad but a possibilty

Well, given the site we're on maybe, but the one post thing gives me just a little hope.

ok, so it just shows two things
1) cal is not as prestigious of a school as you think.
2) ECs are important.

"1) cal is not as prestigious of a school as you think."

Oh sure but it was ranked 4th on Americas Best colleges 07'

"1) cal is not as prestigious of a school as you think."

I think the word you're looking for is "selective." Selective and prestigious, while linked, are not the same thing.

selectivity eventually leads to prestige the way i see it because when you take only well-rounded students it makes your school extremely prestigious because of the kids it comprises of

yeah , college look at alot more than test scores and gpa. I know a kid with an okay gpa, a 28 ACT and she got into MIT.

Hahaha he thinks 4.0-4.1 is weak. Wait till he gets to Berkeley!

There is some truth to the OP's post though. My observations also show there is sometimes huge disparities between those who get in; I guess the admissions committee has their own way.

Not to knock any of the replies - or to agree with the OP, either (!) -- but, I think what the OP is angry about is that he/she realizes now that admission was possible with less work on his/her part. Therein lies the resentment, perhaps.

It is never possible to know why other people were admitted -- why the same institution that admitted you also admitted someone you consider yourself "above," or more accomplished than. Universities have a variety of ways of perceiving & judging merit. And even if those ways were uniform, you would only "know" a small handful of academic records, not the entire universe of acceptees. Perhaps there were superior applicants to the OP, and in fact her or his admission was only fractionally more meritorious than that of school mates, and much less meritorious than those of strangers.

to the last two posts : that was what i was trying to express; though I know it did come off "snobby" it wasn't the wya i meant. thanks "virtuoso" and "epiphany" for clarifying things.

"but, I think what the OP is angry about is that he/she realizes now that admission was possible with less work on his/her part. Therein lies the resentment, perhap"

exactly. and i wasn't aware that "4.0 weighted" was considered strong.. or maybe thewhole worlds just gone nuts over college admissions.

i know i'm not the only one that felt this way though. . and i was trying tohave a discussion in a discussion forum with others that felt this way too because this year, there were a LOT of disparities... WIDE disparities that just really did not make sense to everyone. like some people took 10-12 AP's, vals, sals, w/e the whole package... and some people were completely the opposite: 1-2 honors,1-2 aps, retook a D, bad sats (see the contrast)??

Some people criticized me for being "pompous" but honestly some people that did get in at my school were completely the opposite. they were genuinely shocked that they got accepted... and at first everyne (at my school and schools around the area) thught "oh well i guess they got lucky or had a circumstance; or was secretly working on a cure for cancer over the summer (jk)" but now we're bewildered and some of us (including me!!!) are feeling upset . (oh: clarification. not upset because a lot of "inferior" people got in ... but more frustrated and upset because some of us worked a lot harder to get in, when now everything's been revealed: we didn't have to do that)

did anyone else have this situation at their school? (please only reply if you're not out here to pick fights and call people names) some people were saying tha it's because it's a public school but i have no idea. anyone have experience or inside knowledge on this? lol

well obviously there is some Affirmative Action for regular smart people going on. We better have a protest and get a proposal signed.......

sensible look at it this way, people with 2400/5.0 weighted are probably saying the thing about people your kind of stats.
