Yale 2016 SCEA Discussion Thread

Most of my friends know that I’m applying to Yale early. But whenever I tell someone, I always preface it with a “It’s a total super-reach, but…”

Keeping my expectations low, haha. At this point I’m hoping for just not a straight up rejection ://

Though it feels like acceptance is impossible, I guess I wouldn’t have applied if I thought I had no chance of getting in haha this wait is pretty harsh

It’s interesting how we only have about 80 pledgers this year. Isn’t it usually a lot higher? Based off of the 139 last year, that’s like a 40% drop.

Is there anyone here that didn’t apply to Yale as their first choice? Just curious. I’m guessing most people did. I certainly did.

Well last year at this point there were only 102 pledged and right now we have 75. About a 25% drop. That’s pretty big but when you factor in the 18% drop overall, its not as big. Maybe CC’ers have a higher tendency to like Harvard/Princeton than the average applicant. This may be to our advantage assuming that CC’ers are more motivated than the average applicant.

I have many friends applying to Stanford and other schools that come out on Friday and they are all going crazy. I can’t imagine how I will be in a week.

Think happy thoughts everyone!

As has been said before, the drop in Yale’s number of SCEA applicants is largely due to the fact that Harvard and Princeton have reinstated their own analogous programs (which have been defunct since 2007). Although the actual number of Yale SCEAers has gone down by around 18%, the yield for the class of 2016 should be quite impressive now that all the Cantab-hopefuls/Princetonians are out of the pool.

Columbia and Cornell’s wait is over tomorrow, followed by Dartmouth, Penn, and most likely Stanford on Friday. Why must Yale give us less time to write supplements in the case of not getting in :(

these following 1.5 weeks are going to be insane for my classmates and I…ha…I wish the whole week would just fly by more quickly. I’m hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst. I recommend that everyone at least draft their other supplements; it’ll be horrible trying to finish up more college applications within 15 days…

Um. So this is going to seem foolish, but how do we actually find out? Do I just log into my Eli account (the one with the checklist of things they received and will find out from there?)

^ I believe an “admissions decision” portal opens up below the admissions document checklist. Yale should tell us how to access it all in an e-mail early next week. (I hope!)

So, I have heard of some schools sending likely letters to some early applicants; has anyone heard of Yale doing so?

@Jackyt: Yes. When you go to the Eli Account section of Yale’s webpage…

[Eli Accounts | Yale College Admissions](http://admissions.yale.edu/eli-accounts)

…you’ll see a bulleted list of Undergraduate Admissions websites that you can access using your Eli Account. The only active link as of right now is the first one: Application Status.

However, on the evening of December 15, the Early Action Online Decisions link you see below it will be active, too. You can click on that link to receive your decision: either you will be redirected to a blue webpage with a singing bulldog (acceptance!) or a statement of deferral or rejection :(

So what’s the word on site overload? Does anyone know if that’s been an issue in years past?

It has been a issue and probably will be this year as well.

I’ve always found it a little strange there’s such a low representation of applicants on CC…
I always figured this is where the party’s at.
4310 SCEA applicants
… yet not even 100 pledges?

I’m hoping that with the problems in past years, they’ve beefed up the system and especially with early apps declining by nearly 1/5 this year they’ll have excess capacity and it should work better. But that’s just wishful thinking…

Also, just recognized–all references to “mid-December” have been removed and replaced with “the evening of December 15.” I guess that’s the final confirmation!

Seven days

What do you guys think about the Yale Tomorrow plan and the new residential colleges? I remember reading about it when it reached its intended goal, but haven’t read much about the expansions since. Any idea on whether it’ll impact admissions in order to fill a predicted growth of the school? D:

Of course it’ll impact admissions -
Yale has always cited that one of the primary reasons it’s focusing on constructing more residential colleges is to admit a larger class, because it has to turn down so many highly qualified applicants each year.

The total increase in class size will likely only be 100, maybe 200, which is really just a drop in the bucket, when over 90% of all applicants are turned away. Maybe it will increase the acceptance rate by a minuscule amount, but I doubt it will have much impact.

EDIT: Ok, after reading up, it looks like it will increase the class size by ~200. But still, I don’t think it will have much of an impact.
