I would think that Harvard would get more “what the heck” apps – It has even more of a “name-brand” appeal to people looking just for that and, more importantly, its supplement requires no additional work, whereas Yale’s is actually somewhat onerous.

“Yale’s is actually somewhat onerous.”

Yale’s supplement is far from onerous – it’s actually one of the easiest supplements out there compared to its peer schools (Princeton, MIT, Stanford, UChicago, etc.). Although Harvard does not require a supplemental essay, many applicants, including my own two kids, submitted their Yale supplement to Harvard. So, I don’t think it’s accurate to say that Harvard gets a lot more “what the heck” applications than Yale because it has an easier supplement.

"I wonder how many of these applicants are applying knowing they have pretty much no chance and are thus deflating the acceptance rate (I know a couple but I imagine it can’t be too high… unfortunately) "

Well I too applied to Yale… I have good academics and Scores (that puts me in mid 50-60 percent of accepted) however, I know I am never going to be admitted… So count me in that group which contribute to lower the Yale acceptance rate…

sigh aren’t we all lowering the acceptance rate?
but what can we do? we’re all chasing the New Haven dream, that doesn’t mean that we don’t deserve it
let’s just cross our fingers and hope for the best, because a select few of those “i have no chance” applicants actually end up getting accepted! (please let it be me :P)

…

If college admissions were anything like the movie Saw, I’d be one of the first people to die…in an insanely stupid way

@Ragdolls… hahaha good one man/woman… However, why can’t it be me? :P… (although, I know why?)…

wow.
that is just. so. calming.
gives a sense of hope.
not.

thanks T26E4. gah. farewell, yale.

There’s alway hope prospective bulldogs. Don’t get discouraged!

Never tell me the odds.

When we went to the Yale info night in the fall, our state’s admission rep told us that 1600 seniors applied to Yale in 2012 and 35 were accepted from our state. 4.7% sounds so much better than the 2.2% chance I have been telling myself that my son has. :)

momma: if you’re in MI, then you must have misheard the number of 1600. MI didn’t have that many applicants in 2012 – it never has. I know that for sure.

Updated numbers are as follows:
SCEA apps: 4520
SCEA rejects/withdraws: 1302
SCEA accepts: 649
Total evaluated apps was 29,610.
Total admits: 1991.

Overall admit rate : 6.72%
SCEA admit rate: 14.4%
RD admit rate:

(1991-649)/(29610-649-1302) = 4.85%

The number updates are due to withdrawn and incomplete apps and actuals (admitting 1991 vs the traditional 1950)
