Yale 2021 Applicants

@Georgia101 where do you live? I live in the SF Bay Area and I’m surprised that I did not receive any interview requests from Yale. Interviews are my strong suit and I’m disappointed that I never received one from Princeton or Yale despite receiving them for all the other Ivies I applied to. However, it’s encouraging to see from previous results threads that many applicants got in without an interview.

@dewrrrett glad to know that I’m not the only one in a large metropolitan area that didn’t get their interview. I live in San Diego. Interviews have definitely been going really well for me too, so I’m kinda bummed that I didn’t get one for Yale. I was lucky and got my Princeton one, that went amazing, so at least I have that to cheer me up. Good luck!

Does anybody know what exactly likely letters are and who gets them? My twin sister got into Harvard this fall SCEA and did’t receive a likely letter, however other people reported getting them in the mail.

@ILoveStanford Likely letters are sent out to very appealing applicants by schools who want to make sure that they commit to their school and not somewhere else. They essentially say that they legally can’t tell you that you’re accepted, but you should expect good news on decision release day. The reason why they do that is because once they’ve accepted such a strong applicant, they know that other prestigious schools likely have too, and they want to keep that applicant for their school.

@ILoveStanford my understanding is that they use likely letters during the Regular Decision round. I don’t think they send them to SCEA applicants :slight_smile: (I could be wrong) I know that sometimes they will call recruited athletes in the SCEA round, but likely letters are normally referring to physical letters.

Thanks for the info! Did you apply to Yale this year?

Hey everyone, just joining the discussion. This is my first-ever post on CC! I thought I should let anyone who is disappointed about not getting an interview (@Georgia101) know that I was contacted for an interview about three days ago and will have the interview tomorrow, so it seems like it’s not over yet.

I live in Dallas, Texas. Still have not received an interview. Does this mean I most likely will be rejected?

@TheShortSon No. They have a limited amount of people to do interviews and it’s mostly due to alumni availability. Your chance of admissions is not affected.

Due to some really bad circumstances that left me physically unable to apply, I missed the deadline. I was waiting on some things from my counselor when 2 or 3 days before Christmas, something happened that left me unable to apply.
I was heartbroken about missing the deadline and assumed that admissions wouldn’t accept my application admist my circumstances, so I didn’t pursue.

I’m not making excuses, it was a bad situation that was completely out of my control.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone thinks that Yale would give me a chance at applying. I would shoot an email but I’ve done so with the directors of admissions of two other top schools (Mit & Caltech), who told me that because almost all the apps had been reviewed and there were people deferred, it wouldn’t be fair.
(Caltech’s director also said to contact him if I ever decide to transfer.)

Maybe a call might work better than an email. I just don’t want to mess up this last chance by going about it the wrong way.

Should I call? Does anyone think admissions or the dean/director of admissions at Yale would be more understanding and grant me the ability to send in my things?

@acrowde At this point, you have zero chance of being allowed to submit your app. It’s about a month until decision day- AOs have almost certainly completed pre-reads and it wouldn’t be fair to the people who did submit on time. Did you apply anywhere at all?

@yonceonhismouth
Thank you for the reply, and yes I applied to other schools (Brown, UCLA and UIC, to name a few), so I’m not at a complete loss.
It probably would have been better to have informed them of the situation in early January, but I was afraid of the rejection of my proposal then.
Good luck! I wish you all the best with Yale.

@acrowde I hope you get into your schools. If you are still interested in Yale, there is always the option of transferring.

Yeah, I’m glad that option is still on the table. Hey, maybe it wasn’t meant to be, Maybe I’m meant to be somewhere else. It doesn’t hurt to try though, so I’m glad I inquired about it.

Did you apply to any of the schools I mentioned, as well? I did Uchicago (it and Yale were tied for top choice), a couple other ivies, UC Berkeley, Middlebury, and American University.

Of the ones you’ve listed, I’ve applied to Brown, Midd, Columbia, Yale (clearly) and Princeton.

I applied to many of the same schools as you did. Would you mind listing your objective/subjective stats?

Have you considered taking a gap year, if these schools mean so much to you? Nobody would frown upon it.

@DryMango @acrowde a gap year is a great idea!

@acrowde first of all don’t give up on your dreams. Stuff happens! It wouldn’t hurt to call Yale admissions and make your bold request that they give you chance to apply. Then if they say no - talk to them about alternative paths… Can you apply for spring? What about taking a gap year? If you did take a gap year what would increase your chances? And if you want to go to college next year and transfer- what would position you best for transferring?
I encourage you to be bold in asking for information at least you will know your options. You are also showing interest!
