Yale 2023 Applicants Discussion

@lemonlime13 Thank you, phew!

@Pierson91 Objectively, do you think that a i strong interview is powerful enough to make up for other parts of the application? (Say like strong extracurriculars and strong test scores but only a decent GPA).

Your transcript is the most important component of your application. https://admissions.yale.edu/what-yale-looks-for A strong interview is not going to make up for any deficiencies in your app. A strong interview will confirm an already positive view of the applicant by the AO, but will not turn a no into a yes. Remember what the interview represents is an opinion of an alum who is not a trained professional AO based on an 1 hour ± interaction. They are accordingly weighted. In the truly borderline cases, it may be the feather that tilts the scales one way or another.

@Pierson91 Thank you! It is reassuring to know there are not enough interviewers to go around. I hope it is the case with my daughter, even though we are in a popular area in California. Quick question: Are those to be interviewed pre-screened by AO, or every applicant has a chance and it is basically up to the alumni interviewers to decide whom to interview?

QUESTION- After an interview is completed, do you receive a notification that your interviewer as submitted your evaluation/recommendation to Yale? My son completed his interview, but has not received anything of the sort. Thanks!

@idontcare333 no you don’t. my interviewer did email me to let me know which was very nice of her

Just got an interview request. The guy said that he was asked by the admissions office to talk with me about Yale. Is this a good sign?

Our job is to both find out more about you and tell you about Yale, so SOP. We do not notify interviewees when we submit their reports. Again to reiterate, as Yale interviewers, we do not receive any information on the applicant other than contact info, high school and area of academic interest as indicated by the interviewee in their application. We have no idea how the AO views the applicant.

A Yale alumni emailed me saying that he had been assigned to interview me. I emailed him back saying I would love to have an interview, then he promptly responded and said that Yale made a mistake in that they didn’t mean to assign him to me, because there are many more interviewers who live closer by that can give me an interview. He said that I would be contacted on Nov 20-21st by my new interviewer.
I still haven’t heard from my new interviewer. What does this mean? Did they just drop my interview? Should I email him back asking if he’s heard of anything/has any updates on my interview? I’m kind of worried. He says that having/not having the interview in no way impacts how I’m viewed as an applicant, but I can’t help but wonder.

Maybe you should email him back. Someone mentioned before on this thread that the deadline for interview reports by alumni is Dec 1st. Its already 24th. Idk by my uninformed opinion, you should email the admissions office and him.

My daughter still hasn’t received an interview invite yet. Is it a good idea to email the admission officer and ask about it?

The Yale website states that students shouldn’t call the admissions office about alumni interviews. My son hasn’t received an interview request, but he does not plan to call.

Is it slightly true that students don’t get an interview will be deferred? It does sort of make sense to me. Did anyone know there is someone didn’t get an interview for SCEA round has gotten in?

Don’t start panicking about not being contacted for an interview yet. Last year, I didn’t receive my contact until late November. Also, please take into consideration what many others have already stated: a) An interview request is not indicative of a “good” or “bad” sign regarding your application; with a record number of SCEA applicants, it is simply not possible for Yale’s alumni network to provide every applicant with an interview–I know a few students on campus who were not contacted for an SCEA interview but were admitted nonetheless b) While most interviews will be wrapping up, there are still others that will be receiving interview requests into December; I remember from last year some applicants receiving interview requests up until a few days before decisions were released. Enjoy your holiday season all–don’t try to read tea leaves that aren’t there in the first place

If someone isn’t able to be interviewed during the early round, and ends up deferred, are they given some sort of higher priority during regular round interviewing or are those interviews reserved just for those who applied RD?

When will SCEA results come out this year? We thought it would be Dec 14th? But looking at Harvard message board, they will come out 5pm Dec 13th? Won’t it make more sense these two schools the same time?

@esc2023 usually yale results come out on the thursdays of the second week in december like harvard’s this year so yeah i was surprised that it’s the 14th not the 13th as well

While Ivy League schools do make their RD announcements on the same day, that is not the case for SCEA/ED. Last year, Harvard announced SCEA decisions before Yale.

@esc2023 Yale SCEA decisions are Dec. 15 this year.

@Cherax they are the 14th as listed on the applicant portal

My bad, I must have misread it : ))
