hi guys! i am planning to apply to yale scea, and i’m using the common app. on yale’s website, they said there’s an optional engineering supplement, but i can’t find it anywhere on the common app. can someone help me out?! for reference, i am applying as a comp sci + math major!
^It only pops up if you indicate one of the engineering majors as your top academic interest. It pops up in the Additional Questions section.
@BKSquared thank you so much!!
also does anyone know if the 35-word supplements are supposed to be super artfully written? i can’t really do much with 35 word limits.
^More important to convey substance than for it to be artful prose.
@Benji3025 - Congrats! The YSO (Yale Symphony Orchestra) Halloween Show is one of the things that makes Yale special, so applicants should know about it. Thanks for the “shout out”!
i just got my sat subject test scores and I got a 740 in physics. is it worth submitting this to Yale early or should I take November and just send that one?
im so torn on whether or not to submit a creative writing supplement :((
@allsmiles27 what major are you applying under? I think 740 is excellent tho. if I were you I would submit that and not take it again
@dreamthief001 , just my opinion, but I think this is another case of “less is more.” As in many supplements, it is intended for extraordinary and realized talent; if you’re not sure that you fall in that category, I would not submit it. Let the strength of your essay speak for you.
@IxnayBob thank you for the input. that’s what I’ve been thinking as well. do you think even if the supplement did show talent, it is still better to just submit the required materials?
There’s talent, and then there’s extraordinary and realized talent. IMO, unless you clearly are in the latter group, I would just submit the required material. I am an amateur, with no direct knowledge of Yale AO, but I am inclined to take them at their word.
@dreamthief001 thank you!! i was thinking the same at first, but didn’t know bc the applicant pool can be extremely competitive. i am applying as an econ + math major
@allsmiles27 how many subject tests are you planning to submit? My son is thinking in the hum/social sciences category for major and will submit a Math 2 and a US History at most.
@JBStillFlying I am submitting 2 as well. math 2 and physics. I really hope quantity doesnt matter.
do you think just submitting one would look bad? debating whether or not to submit my 710 US History
Send both. Sending one is not following instructions and it looks like you are hiding something. A 710 in USH is not going to be the reason you get rejected.
my parents want me to retake physics, so I am just submitting math 2 for right now as well. if you can, you should try to take november b/c that is still an option. i don’t think quantity matters though
@BKSquared thanks! that’s what i’ll do
@allsmiles27, I don’t think that is a good idea. A 740 in Physics is fine. If you just submit 1 score now and your November results are not available in time, the AO may assume the worse that you are hiding a bad score (which a 740 is not). You can always self report a higher score if you get a better result in November. If you are applying RD vs SCEA, you are better off submitting the 2 best scores at the same time once you know what they are rather than piecemealing it.
Yale only requires self report. Is it necessary to send scores now?
