Hi everyone, I realize its quite early to start such a discussion, but I figure why not? I’m ready to start drafting my essays and short answers in the next few weeks - what about you all?
thanks for posting!
This was so helpful! I have my interview in five days…really nervous.
@BKSquared How often do you get requests to expedite interviews for specific applicants, and are you told the reason for expediting when requests like that come in?
^I have never been personally asked to do a last minute expedited interview in over 25 years of doing this. I wouldn’t be surprised that it occasionally happens when a candidate who was not initially assigned an interview (or the interviewer failed to connect with the candidate) is on the bubble at committee. I could also see a situation where a legacy kid doesn’t get an interview and the parent/grandparent complains. The AO is generally very respectful of interviewers’ time and schedule, so any last minute expedited request is most likely meaningful.
When will Yale be doing interviews until? If i haven’t received one yet, is it likely that I won’t be receiving one?
BKSquared.
My daughter in the D.C. area did not receive an interview yet.
This is the only school to not offer one.
Should she panic?
We do not have any hooks like legacy or first gen.
We called but they refused.
This seems absurd because there are many who attended Yale in the D.C. area.
While there may be many Yale alums in the DC area, there may not necessarily be enough to interview all the applicants in the area. An interview is not going to make or break your daughter’s application. Good luck!
“An interview is not going to make or break your daughter’s application…”
Indeed, sometimes interview is not even a needed item for admission when scheduled. My daughter was contacted by AO for a “likely letter” acceptance while still having her interview pending. Of course, she will still go to the interview as if nothing has happened.
Son just had his interview today and the experience was quite different from all other interviews he had before. The interviewer is a newly graduated Yale student. He was 10 minutes late and rushed through the chat. He dressed very casually. (Son was debating whether to dress up or not; good thing he did not.) He frequently used profanities in the conversation. I get it that’s how kids talk these days, but son didn’t know whether he should talk in the same language or not, so it got a little bit uncomfortable. Anyway, I know interview doesn’t count much, but it’s just so different from other interviews and my mental image of Yale.
@jzducol Out of curiosity, did your daughter get a likely letter for STEM??
^yes, my understanding is that most Yale LLs during RD go to 100 or so STEM applicants. I personally know three of them this year, all are STEM.
@jzducol That was my understanding as well. A girl in my daughter’s class received a Yale LL letter/call as well. Are the three you know all from the same school??? It’s odd because although I don’t know all of the details, the girl from our school doesn’t have stellar stats (really good but I wouldn’t think LL level)…Ironically my daughter is just as strong in STEM but wants to pursue Women’s Studies…Yale usually takes 3-4 from our huge public high school every year, and I
a) haven’t heard of somebody ever getting a LL and b) wonder how it effects the other kids applying…
BTW - congratulations to your daughter!! That’s fantastic!
^The three LLs I know are from different schools. My daughter just had her Yale interview and said Yale had the most enthusiastic ambassador of its college among the interviewers of top schools. If she had to choose a college based solely on alum interview it would be Yale.
@jzducol My daughter had a really good Yale interview as well; I have to say though - her favorite (in the way of getting her excited about a school) was the interviewer from Brown.
Would you mind sharing your daughter’s stats? Was there something you could point to that singled her out for a LL (other than great grades and scores I’m sure)?
@wrenwu She does have perfect stats, but so do most Yale applicants I imagine. She had some national/int STEM awards too, but that was no guarantee either. I speculate that she was lucky among thousands of high achieving candidates in that she had interests and accomplishments beyond typical STEM profile, such as in journalism, film and writing.
Thank you! Good luck to your daughter - she sounds like she has a bright future ahead of her!
@adz not sure if this helps, but I am also an applicant from the DC area and did not receive an interview request. I was worried that I was the only one who had not received an interview request.
Whether you have an interview or not, your application is supposed to be read just the same. It shouldn’t hurt you if you didn’t get an interview. It’s all based on location and availability of the interviewer.
Haven’t received an interview request. I’m an international student from India. I know people say that it’s random and wont go against me although I think otherwise. Am I screwed
