Yale 2024 Applicants Discussion

@excoverer yesterday and today? why?

@LilHopefulYalie @excoverer It went well! both my teachers agreed to write a recommendation for me. I was sooo scared that they were going to say no or something. but they were actually super casual about it. I guess the hardest part about asking for a recommendation was the mental anguish I put in my head. Good luck to everyone who still hasn’t asked yet! if I, a super shy and anxious person, could do it, then you guys definitely can!

@beautifulchaos YAYY!! I’m so glad it went well for you!! You deserve it, you really do! I’m sure the letters will be stellar!

I’m asking my teachers if I can have a conference with them about my rec letter next week. I decided asking early was the best way to go so they know in advance.
I already asked one out of the two and, thank goodness, she happily agreed and was even excited for the meeting between us. I just hope it goes well with my next teacher as well :joy:

@beautifulchaos @Lunarlitgend Very delighted to hear it went well. Congratulations to the both of you! Good luck, @Lunarlitgend, in asking your next one.

@LilHopefulYalie It is because I forgot to ask one of my teachers and had to ask him the next day.

Have a nice day.

@excoverer Thank you!
Update! I asked my second teacher and she happily agreed as well!
Crossing my fingers that the conferences go well

ok nice to hear. good luck to everyone!

Is everyone done with school?

@Bippitybopity No, not yet. I end school next week. You?

@Bippitybopity Not yet, sorry. My last day is June 13.

Have a nice day.

@Bippitybopity no not really. I am having my final exams from now until like June 10

I just finished my first draft of my essay, and hopefully, the feedback I get from ne of my most trusted teachers will help to ensure it gets better. I plan on applying SCEA as well.

Its a little bit daunting as an international student (Southern Africa) studying the IB in an international chain of schools (studying in China)

@jbinz18 Hi! Welcome the Yalie support group!!
Congrats on finishing the first draft of your essay! That’s amazing!! LOL and it’s inspiring me to get started on mine now.
I’m sure after your teachers look over it and such it’ll become better and better and soon you’ll have it perfected by the time the deadline approaches

It’s cool that you’re an international student! It does seem a little intimidating, I can only imagine especially since the acceptance rate can be lower for you guys. But considering that you’re applying I’m sure you’re already an exceptional student and you can have as much of a fair chance as everyone here.

I’m currently struggling to decide if I should apply SCEA or not… If I don’t apply to Yale early, I’ll apply to Reed, Georgetown, Smith, UW-Madison, UMich, and maybe a few others. They’re all schools that I would be happy going to, but I think that I have a decent chance of getting in RD anyway. Should I apply to Yale SCEA?

@partyparrot Hi! Welcome to the Yalie Support Group :joy:
To answer your question in terms of UW-Madison and UMich, you should be fine because those are public schools. If you apply SCEA to Yale you can still apply early to public schools but not privates.
It even says it on their website:
"You may apply to any college’s non-binding rolling admission program.
You may apply to any public institution at any time, provided that admission is non-binding. "
As for Georgetown and Smith, those are privates so you can’t apply early to them.

If you really want to go to Yale, if you know Yale is truly right for you, and if you know that if you got in early you’d be willing to go then yes apply SCEA. But if that’s not how you feel about Yale and/or you want to be open to more options then apply regular decision. It’s true that if you apply early you do get a better chance but that chance is a small one, especially since the early pool tends to have more competitive applicants than the regular pool.

Hopefully, that helps

@partyparrot welcome to the group and yes you should still apply to Yale SCEA if you really love and believe that yale is the right school for you. None of us know what will happen so we all are hoping for the best!

Hi! I’m not 100% sure because I still need to have meetings with my college counselors, and obviously Yale is an extreme reach (lol), but I think I’m going to apply to Yale SCEA also! Of course, I’m still visiting other schools still because I haven’t really had a chance yet (I’m still in school and I work during the summer, so I don’t know when these visits will happen, lol pt. 2), but I doubt I’ll prefer any over Yale. I’m applying to fly-ins (I wish Yale had one ?) to keep my options open, but I absolutely fell in love when I visited Yale. Good luck to everyone here with whatever you all decide to do!!

@2020chica that’s amazing! I haven’t got to visit Yale’s campus but I know its very beautiful! I hope to at least tour the campus one day

I also hope you get to visit! It’s amazing! I got lucky because I live in a nearby state and am a student in a program that takes us on college trips.

Hey guys just a little update! I had a conference with two of my teachers today about my recommendation letters. I gave them my resume and brag sheet and our conferences lasted around 20+ minutes. To my surprise, it went really well. Better than I expected. They both agreed to write my letters over the summer and we’ll be staying in touch with one another through Email over the summer while they’re writing it. It feels good having that taken care of and I’m really grateful that they’re taking the time to do this for me.
Hopefully, you guys all had a good experience with your teachers and teacher recommendations as well

But, LOL, that means the essays/common app are next on the list. KFNSKFNKSFLJLKSFJSDL :joy:
Do any of you plan on starting your common app essay/personal essay anytime soon?

@Lunarlitgend That’s great news. Congrats, and I hope your letters of rec go very well!

In terms of essays, I have a draft done because it was our final exam in English class, but I’m considering switching my topic and writing a totally new essay. UChicago essays have a lot of great prompts, and I have been looking at some for inspiration as well.

Have a nice day.
