Does anyone know how Yale and Brown calculate EFC? Is there a calculator somewhere on their websites? I can't find one.

I used the one here on the CC site and it was right on the money.

The Y calculator has been down for a while, don’t think B ever had one. In my experience, Y is more generous than B for families with incomes ca. 100-200k/yr.

My family makes 8k/year, but we own a house worth $400K with no mortgage. The 8k/year includes business income, and we have no health insurance.

Can I expect a zero EFC at either school?

Due to your unusual financial situation, I can’t give you any more information than you got in your previous thread.

^Thanks for the reply. Can I expect the schools to contact me regarding my financial situation? (after I submit the profile).

You’ll have to take the initiative and contact them, as often as necessary. As an adult, no one’s going to be holding your hand and begging you to keep up with your responsibilities, Luminouzz.

^Alright, I never said I wanted to shirk responsibility. I’m just not sure if I should randomly call their FA office in advance to explain my situation. I don’t even know what to say, as there aren’t any special circumstances aside from my parent’s unemployment.

Don’t let him get to you, Luminouzz. He seems to enjoy phrasing all of his advice in the most obnoxious way possible. As far as your financial aid – they will send you an aid offer themselves. If they don’t, or you want to consider an appeal then that’s when you contact them.

I think you posted before about this issue.

I think these schools are going to be suspicious about how a family lives on $8k per year, yet has a home with no mortgage worth $400k. I think they will be concerned that your family does some unusual bookkeeping with the family business.

After all, the property taxes and utilities for such a home would be at least $2k-4k per year…not to mention food, clothing, etc.

^I tried to PM you, but your box is full. We don’t have a family business. We have no health insurance and we have accumulated debt.

Should I communicate this to schools before applying? Are need blind schools (the Ivies) only aware of my financial situation after an acceptance? I might be listing Questbridge finalist on my application though.

offtopic:

hey mom, sorry but your inbox is full lol. I can’t pm you back.

qweasd…PM box now cleared. :)
