yale anyone?

kellogg Idk if you applied but Emory Scholars would have been a nice option for you… Assuming you have really good stats, you could have picked up one of the 150 or so Full Scholarships that Emory gives out to deter students from attending HYP and instead go to Emory. Maybe this is a bit too late to say this… but o well.

^alam1, could you give me more info. on that in a PM or email? I am actually quite interested. Also, are those open to all international students and what would be the chances of us, canadians, getting one of those scholarships?

i’ve never even heard of emory before coming here on cc (i’m really ignorant when it comes to us universities, i no…)

my plan from the get go is win big or go home. that is, either get into an ivy (or similar caliber school) or go to ut or something…

^Most knowledgeble CCers would consider Emory to be pretty much the same caliber as the lower Ivies like Cornell. But I see where you’re coming from. Also, ut for undergrad? sounds like a bad idea. huge class sizes, bad student experience (everyone I know hates it), TAs teaching, very graduate focused. If I stayed in Canada, I would personally go to Queens. Nonetheless, good luck.

I live in Toronto, and I feel like half of the ppl I know go there = =
Apart from all the bad things you’ve mentioned, UT is nice in its location. Toronto’s sort of “artsy” in some aspects, and you could do stuff if you live downtown. Whereas in unis like Queen’s, you don’t really have a city you could do stuff in. That’s my reasoning anyways. xD

“my plan from the get go is win big or go home. that is, either get into an ivy (or similar caliber school) or go to ut or something…”
My thoughts exactly. xD Actually, the only school I really really like right now is still just Brown…T-T

what do u like about brown?

open curriculum, opportunity to take classes @ RISD, location (I don’t wanna go south, and it’s close enough to an urban centre), size, its name (BROWNNNN, it’s a colour! albeit my least favourite colour = =), and its strong art/sci departments, and it has study abroad programs with cambridge.
also, it’s an ivy, so umm, prestige…xD

i haven’t visited it yet, so i can’t really say i’ll love it for sure, but from the research i’ve done so far, it’s def my favourite.

^brown the worst colour? come on now guys…i may be biased though…aahah

but yea, I agree with alam1, i’d say Emory is a tiny below Cornell in terms of like comparing schools and such. It is one of those schools that are in the South, but under the shadow of the Ivys. But it is a very good school. It is part of that Southern ring of great schools including Duke, Vandy, North Carolina, and Rice. Emory is also a premed gathering school lol. Definitely premed oriented.

I’m surprised you haven’t heard of it kelloggss, since you wanna be premed too. But I understand your stance of go big or go home…I think you’d be a better fit at McGill/Queen’s by the way, rather than a UT like school

^ have you visited queen’s yet? i don’t like the reputation it has in my school, even though it’s probably false stereotyping = =

haven’t visited, but it seemed to have a good rep. from what i’ve heard about the school.

Queen’s is getting new science buildings I think. They have a nice campus but the stereotype is that the students are snobbish and elitist.

I already have an acceptance there so it’s my safety if all my US schools fail. =/

I visited Queens… campus was pretty nice… gf said that it was the nicest campus out of the three she visited which were Waterloo, Mcmaster, Queens… but I didnt find it impressive because I had visited Emory and U Mich. … which were significantly nicer than Queens campus. darksoulz, did you apply to any US matches or safeties or only reaches?

Nope only reaches. Safeties are in Canada. I didn’t see a purpose to applying to a match in the States if I could get a comparable education in Canada for a lot cheaper…

Well. I was going to apply to JHU (somewhat of a match), but I didn’t have time to write my essays when I had major IB projects due in the begining of January.

k, so for the states schools that aren’t need-blind, in case they accept you, do they still give you FA?

If they meet full demonstrated need, they’ll give you enough aid for you to attend. It’ll just be 100x harder to get into the school versus if you don’t apply for FA.

if those schools accept u (which is extremely difficult given that u’ve indicated u’ll be applying for FA), it is because they really want you and they are prepared to pay ur FA.

for need blind schools it doesn’t matter though, which is why the majority of applicants apply there anyways (like international ones). Usually international applicants are solid to start with, plus the bonus of not having to battle for FA is great. Hence, HYP are popular.

But kelloggss is right. Think about it logically or from the perspective of an admission committee member. Bunch of students applying for FA and a bunch without FA. Obviously, the better “bargain” for them is to take the non-FA students. You gotta make them want you bad for them to give you FA at non-need blind schools…this is why it is so tough. It sucks, I like Brown a lot too, wish they were need blind for Canadians.

yea i get that, it’s like if there’s two of the same thing, but one is free and the other ain’t…then obviously you go for the free one. xD
i just wasn’t sure if the school gives fa if they’re not need blind.

my chances of getting into brown is really microscopic, but one can still hope. =D
if i don’t get in, canadian ones are okay too, i won’t mope over it too much…

yea, realistically everyone has a relatively low shot, unless they have >2270 SAT. but keep your hopes up…apply to some need blind ones (HYP)…maybe apply to a couple match schools or ones you’d like to go to (NYU maybe?) if you wanna go to the US for sure.

and canadian ones are great too. but nothing compares to an Ivy league/top 20 school education…just look at endowments and class sizes. this is why you can’t compare UofToronto to any Ivy league school

I agree with Viggyram that top 20 or even top 25 US universities offer a different kind of college experience that no good Canadian school (U of T, Queens, Mcgill etc) can accomplish and that is extremely small class sizes and incredible facilities made possible by huge endowments. Also, U of T ( as good of a school it is) offers a horrible student experience. College is about academics but its important to take into account other social aspects because you don’t want to be miserable at the college you go to. haha, now that you mentioned NYU, I actually got in today. It was my match school as well.

Also, where did you come up with the arbitrary 2270 SAT number? Seems a bit random.
