Yale Arts Scene - Overwhelming?

Hello everyone,

Due to some miracle I have been accepted to the Yale Class of 2014, and I have recently spent a lot of time bopping around the accepted students website, looking at student reviews, etc. One thing I notice is that it seems like *everyone/I at Yale is heavily involved in the arts. I knew coming in that Yale was a very "artsy" place, but it seems that I may have underestimated the pervasiveness of Yale's music and theatre scenes. Personally, the extent of my involvement with the arts consists of 2 weeks of trombone in 4th grade. Do you think that I might be a bad fit for the Yale student body?

Its not that I detest the performing arts or anything, its just never something I ever enjoyed very much. I just wonder whether I might be cut off from the rest of the student body or something if I choose not to participate in those types of activities. I am very excited about Yale's athletic offerings and plan to be really involved in my residential college's intramural teams and might also join a club team if possible. I'm sure I won't be the only Yalie heavily interested in sports, but I also don't want to constantly feel as if I'm part of the minority on campus because I'm not part of any symphonies, dance clubs, theater troupes, or a capella groups.

Thanks so much for your help.

It’s not true that everyone on campus is involved with arts. There’s lots of other things to do on campus. You don’t have to be involved with arts at all if you don’t want to be. But it’s there to enjoy, even if you don’t feel like dedicating your time to it. you’ll be fine.

Don’t be overwhelmed – just see it as a VERRRY LOOONG buffet table. You’ll have many draws upon your time. The very comprehensive arts scene is just one of them. But by no means are you “on the outs” if you yourself don’t immerse yourself into them. I was like you: sports minded but not that culturally aware. I was able to increase my awareness and enjoyment of the arts just because of the proximity to such great offerings. I can honestly say it was four of the most culturally and artistically rich years of my life.

Absolutely not. I have spent a year here, have some artsy friends, some sciency friends, some big-shot political-type friends, and have not been overwhelmed in any way by anything except the happiness that I experience everyday. I LOVE IT HERE.

SERIOUSLY. It’s not like the best place ever, it IS the best place ever.

thickfreakness… i got accepted to yale 2014 too… and i am most definitely not an artsy person… so theres at least one! lol

Thanks so much for the responses. This is very reassuring for me and I am now that much more excited for BDD!

@thickfreaknessme too!!! BDD is gonna be so fun!

yo, PM me your name, ill find you on the yale admit site! lol i LOVE that site… the bulldog chat is amazing :P

I got accepted too yale 2014 and I am probably the furthest thing from artsy. Im all about the athletics and residential colleges. im pumped for next year

yes, good! that’s exactly why i love yale. if i end up going to yale I would consider bribing my way into Silliman college (too bad I have no money). they have their own basketball court (ya Sillidome!), which would be soo amazing.

yo tbird202 same here… what sports are you into???

I’m in the same boat as the rest of you. 2014. No art for me.

Well I got recruited for diving so I’m diving there but I’m looking to do alot of intermirals as well. Any of them. I enjoy all sports and compitition. How about you guys?

I definitely haven’t been recruited for anything but I want to try some new sports at Yale. Ha who knows? We might all be wrapped up in the arts scene three years from now and look at ourselves stunned at where we ended up.

nah. yalies just like to get involved in everything. there are a lot of performances every week…but most are free so & being an audience member can be a fantastic experience. most of the shows are really great! and it is cool to see people in a different context from classses and clubs and political rallys and stuff!

@ tbird - Ya, I’m open to anything really, but I’m definitely going to be hardcore into intramurals. Personally, I love staying active but really hate running for my exercise, so I’ll definitely be looking out for anyone interested in pickup basketball/tennis/frisbee/anything.

@ msauce - Ya, I haven’t been recruited either but if I find a good club sport that’s easy for beginners I would be up for that as well. There’s nothing like being part of a team, and I’m going to miss that next year if I don’t do any club sport.

The arts scene at Yale is promoted quite pervasively but just like any other college, Yale has an extremely diverse student body with a wide variety of interests. Congratulations on your Yale acceptance and you should definitely not be discouraged by Yale’s strong arts scene.

@tbird im definitely all track and field! aha, i like volleyball and bball on occasion, but i waas recruited for track and am not very good at the other sports
