The opinion piece is behind a pay wall.
If you copy the name of the op-ed “Yale Believes In Free Speech—and So Do I” in a search engine, you can follow the link to the website without pay walls.
I thought speech was supposed to be free… they wanna charge me $12 for it!
@fractalmstr: Speaking is free. Listening costs extra.
@ucbalumnus Is that label intended to denigrate or otherwise minimize the article or author? That is how I perceived your comment and want to make certain I am not misinterpreting your intent.
“Opinion piece” is intended to be an accurate descriptor for something that is in a newspaper’s op-ed section.
I still can’t “copy the title into an internet search engine” and get behind the pay wall… is there a trick I am missing?
^It worked for me. I just copied and pasted.
@ucbalumnus I clearly wasn’t asking for a definition of a commonly known term, nothing in my comment would suggest that. I was simply seeking clarification on why you chose to utilize that term. My perception was that you were trying to diminish or dismiss either Zinhead’s post or the point of the article, written by the President of Yale University. Your non-response enforces that perception.
You’re kidding, right? All UCB did was accurately call it what it is. It’s on the OPINION part of the site- as it says directly above the title.
Is there something wrong with his completely accurate term?
There’s some over-sensitive irony here. 8-|
I copied, searched, and the article appeared. Then, a few seconds later, the article turned illegible and an offer overlaid the screen for $1 for 3 months.
I guess you could describe it that way,…one side does view some speech as “offensive” and hence should be shut down.
Ok, what? I can’t remember anyone on the “free speech” side complaining about “inclusion”. Who doesn’t think Yale should be inclusive? He must define that term differently than I…
And that becomes the basis for the opinion piece, limiting free speech vs limiting “inclusion”. That’s the argument he would rather make than “limiting free speech” vs allowing “offensive” speech. That makes sense, because he wants to defend free speech, and the actions taken to make the campus more inclusive (responding to the demands made by the protestors).
Other than that, it’s a well written piece, defending Yale’s actions, free speech and inclusivity. :-bd
The cut and paste tricked worked fine for me. An Ad popped up, but you can exit out of it.
There is a small “X” on the upper right hand corner of the advertisement. Click the “X” to make the ad disappear.
Works for me with adblock.
I don’t know why i missed the little x the first time. It’s not my first web page :))
The same Yale administration that did nothing in the Halloween costume incident last year now claims that it is all for free speech. Note the exclusions in his statements:
“Yale does not censor invited speakers, nor does the administration discipline faculty members or students for the expression of ideas, no matter how unpopular.”
“In the course of all the events and discussions of the past year, the Yale administration did not criticize, discipline or dismiss a single member of its faculty, staff or student body for expressing an opinion.”
I find this sort of disingenuous proclamation a bit self serving and pompous. I wish he would be honest and admit to past failing and say we are working to change things. That might actually mean something.
The Yale editorial feels like a response to U Chicago’s editorial…
The WSJ editorial page appears to be the new forum for college presidents to debate the first amendment.
This issue must be important to fundraising…

It’s on FB too. Just search Yale University and it’s there. Had no problem viewing it.
FWIW-asked my frosh Yalie if there was some oppressive PC vibe or out of control SJW warriors on campus and he confirmed there is not.
Yale gets a Yellow Rating from FIRE https://www.thefire.org/spotlight/ which is meh, basically
You can check out any school’s free speech rating there. I did and it will influence where I go.
