Yale Chances

Hello,

I am considering of applying to Yale because from the cc community and others I have been told not to limit myself with too few applications to top schools. I therefore though I should throw Yale into my list because, although I thought it was out of reach it does seem to fit things I like (near my family on LI and on the sound, for one thing). However I'd like your opinions on whether it is really worth my time as I know Yale is pretty darn difficult to get into.

Subjective:
ECs:
National Honor Society (president): did a lot of tutoring last year, community service project collecting clothing for homeless, plan to do more next year
Mock Trial (captain): went to regional finals. Would have been top attorney but instructor chose seniors (it goes by selection) :/
Ski Club: purely recreational, though could make an essay?
Piano: 12 years, there are not many competitions around where I live. However I perform often for people, and I am quite good. I will send in a supplement.
Student Ambassador: act as a leader to younger children, get them ready for highschool, guide them around school.

Volunteering:
3 years volunteer at hospital. I will get a presidents award for hospital service. I have approximately 360 hours. I have also been recognized by many of the hospital's departments for my dedication every weekend (I show up alone and do all the work alone).
I play piano often for nursing homes- about 130 hours. I enjoy doing it for the people, it's fulfilling.
Some volunteering at elementary schools- 40 hours (not too much work here)
I will be helping my piano instructor this fall with teaching other students, this will be for 2 months and for 2 hours a week.

Work:
Intern at a prestigious research facility that is actually connected with some ivies. I work in the chair's lab, with all graduate students and postdocs, from ivies mostly. Will try for a recommendation from chair. I think I am doing pretty well, I was invited back for next summer. I went out of state to the city for this.

Awards:
A lot of school academic awards, too many to list
National Merit Commended
AP Scholar (Honors)
President Award for hospital
NLE Cum Laude
NLE Summa Cum Laude

Poem Contest Semi Finalist, Poem is published

Other:
Major: Looking at a double major in English/Biology (looking into Patent Law)
Essay: probably good, I did a practice one for AP Lang after the exam, for the highest grade in the class. It was about piano, I sucked for a while.

Teacher Rec: English Teacher: excellent. really loves me.
AP US teacher: will be above average.

Chair Rec: should be good. I have displayed proficient knowledge with the work in a short time. He also has some very prestigious honors

Guidance counselor: not sure. Likes me, but not a good counselor, so average-above average?

Hook(s): my family struggles a little financially. But doubt that's a hook.

Hello fellow Indian applicant  (lol your username).
1.Your stats are pretty good.
2. Don’t send a musical supplement. Yale hates those. Only those who are professional should send one. If you are really that amazing, go ahead!
3. Are you going to put only 5 EC’s in your app? Or are you considering putting in more? EC’s look solid, but I am finding difficulty in finding something different from the thousands of applicants. Ski Club looks awesome though. Student Ambassador seems interesting as well.
4. Many people on CC will tell you that you aren’t special enough, but to be honest… after hours of trying to find a pattern in the admissions process, I have failed to find one. Admissions is based on a million factors that we as applicants cannot possibly control. I say give it your best shot. If not, leave some other great schools on your list to apply to. I’m applying to 12 different schools. There is bound to be at least 1 that likes me. I advise you to do the same :)

I’m actually not indian. D+ivy=divy. Hahaha. And I’m not an absolute prodigy but I do play upper level music, for example, look up First Arabesque on YouTube for a better idea f my skills (that’s one I plan on using for my supplement). And I’m only
Putting the ECs I put concentrated and devoted time into. I play golf but it’s not a huge thing I do. And I also had a bunch of clubs that I don’t do anything in or quit early on. These things Im passionate about.

Your overall package seems pretty well done, but I suggest you take that SAT again. 2150 is not bad, but definitely not great if you’re shooting for HYP. Unless you’re URM, athlete looking into getting recruited, or legacy, a 2200+ is a highly important factor in the admission process. Your ECs seem solid, and there really isn’y anything you can do about it now if you’re applying this year - all I can say is that structure your application in a way that reveals you in the best possible way, aka don’t throw around random activities you did to impress people, but show adcoms that you’re passionate about something and made a contribution that is meaningful to you. Last thing: work, work, work on those essays! They are super important and can be one of those things that sets you apart from other applicants. Good luck!

Oops sorry about that! ^ Yeah I’d agree with sauternety36… maybe raise your SAT a little… plus the poster above goes to Yale, so I’m guessing he/she knows what they’re talking about. The SAT’s are such a pain :/

Your resume is average on CC. That doesn’t mean you don’t have a chance though. I’ve heard that essays are especially important to Yale since they value creativity more.
