Yale Chances?

First of all I would like to say I am not a fan of chance threads usually. To me they are usually an exercise in hubris, but my stats aren't great and I am in a dilemma if I should even apply, so don't be too harsh.

So here it goes..

Ethnicity: White

State: Florida

Parent's Income: <$100,000

UW GPA 3.75-something...

Class Rank: Class doesn't rank

SAT I:
740 C. Reading, 680 Math, 710 Writing (...) Not superscored, one sitting.

SAT II:
Haven't taken any, never really thought of applying until recently. Will take in October if I decide to apply..

APs:
AP Euro: 5

I'll know three more soon

Extracurriculars:

Big one is debate

On Debate Team 9th-11th Grade

Student Congress Captain 11th Grade Year

Finalist at Wake Forest in Student Congress

Semi-Finalist at Yale Invitation in Student Congress (Does that help much?)

Qualified for Florida State Championship in Extemp Speaking

3rd Place at Regional CFL Tournament in Student Congress

Semi-Finalist at Crestian Classic in Ft. Lauderdale

Went to Debate Camp both summers of sophomore and junior year.

Minor ones:

NHS: 11,12. .
Spanish Club

Employment:

Worked with brother in burger shop he owns. (Five Guys Burger's and Fries)

Community Service: Not very good currently.

50 Hours as a tutor for children

Going to get more this summer

Potential hooks?

I have double legacy at Yale. Both my Grandpa and Uncle went there and my grandpa used to be a professor. I am not even sure if Yale weights legacies heavily.

I also won't be applying for financial aid. I won't really need it and I know they won't give me any.

Well that is it. I would apply SCEA.

Should I even apply and if I do what are my chances. Thanks!

First, Y is need blind for admissions, so whether or not you apply for FA will have no bearing on your admission decision.

Second, <100k family income is well within range for receiving FA from Y. Other factors, particularly family assets, will also determine whether or not you get FA. But my point is that 100k is not necessarily out of range:

[Yale University Financial Aid > Our Philosophy and Policies](<a href=“Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services”>Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services)

Haha… Yale won’t give you any financial aid : ). Not true. My family rolls in slightly more than $100,000 and Yale’s financial aid covered roughly 80% of COA.

I won’t lie. Your chances are slimmer than some, but apply anyway. You never know what will happen and Yale may be looking for people who are strong in debate.

Your stats are at the lower end, but they will not kill you in the holistic approach.

And I just saw you are a double legacy, which means you actually have a very good chance with your decent stats.

Finally, did you by any chance go to Glenbrooks, Harvard, or NFL Nats in student congress… I was a semi-finalist at each ( by the way I also do extemp, but only in my state!)

Even with double legacy, you don’t have good chances. But, they are good enough to warrant applying if you want to go to Yale!

You should retake the SAT in addition to the Subject Tests if you want to become a more competitive applicant.

“But my point is that 100k is not necessarily out of range”

Very true. According to a handout from Princeton (whose FA is comparable to Yale’s), 100% of students whose family incomes are at $100,000 received financial aid. The average loan amount was $35,000 a year.

You may want to hold out for RD in order to have time for the testing.
