Yale chances?

I've been to Yale several times as a kid and a few times during middle school and I loved every inch of the campus and the feeling of being in it. I remember ****ing off my uncle since I would always ask him to drive me to Yale on the weekends; he was a Cornell Professor. Anyway, I've been getting mixed responses from all three of my high school counselors so I decided to give CC a try

ACADEMICS
Medical magnet high school, ranked 40-some on newsweek. Pretty competitive.
SAT: 2170

Rank: 8/165 (setback: only kid in school taking Calculus II; it's not even offered on campus. I go to a medical magnet and I have to go to our district's engineering magnet to take that class. Ridiculously unforgiving teacher. I have a C 1st quarter senior year)

Boy, that's an incomplete looking list.

Anything else you guys need to know?

I'm pretty scared. Yale's at a tie for first choice with Stanford, another university close to my childhood and persona

So....chance me?

I think your chances are decent - you should definitely apply, if you haven’t already. Your ACT score is great, GPA is good as well (although the C might be a little bit of a problem - I’m not sure how they will view it, and it also depends how the grade changes as the year progresses) and your extra-curiculars/ (especially) awards are also good.

thanks man
yeah i was freaking out about that C…theres no use trying to change it tho…
i mean, I’m pretty sure the counselor would tag on a “he’s the only one taking it. most rigorous in school. most.” comment
but i dunno if that’ll offset the only C ive ever had

Obviously, taking Calc II when it is not offered shows great commitment, and that you are willing/capable of excelling beyond what is expected of you. With that said, there are a lot of other applicants to Yale who are in similar situations (or even farther ahead) and are getting A’s… Its not an “ideal” situation, but it is possible that the rest of your app could overshadow/outweigh the weakness

mmm…makes sense.
i’m praying that I can force my second quarter and sem exam grades to push Calc II to the B range and have weights maybe bring it up even more…
thanks a lot man

I should probably update with subject test scores

SAT II
Lit - 740
Math II - 770
Bio M -780

Did you get innnnn???

You’re able to click on a poster’s name and then go down to “Find more posts by ___” to look at everything they’ve put on CC. Based on what I can see, the OP did not get into Yale and instead ended up at Vanderbilt

EDIT: You shouldn’t be surprised that the OP didn’t get in if you were concerned about that. If you’re unhooked and don’t have some amazing ECs/accomplishments/awards that make you stand out, then you’d probably need phenomenal raw stats (GPA/rank, test scores, etc). This was not the case for the OP. He wouldn’t have really stood out in the applicant pool

Vanderbilt is still a very good school. I am banking for Princeton or Yale, but I also be ecstatic to get into Rice!!
