So, how are my chances??!!

Other than Yale, I'll apply at:

Harvard
Columbia
Northwestern
Brown
Stanford
UCLA/UCB/USC

ur Ec's are not fantastic, but you have a hook, languages. If you can pull off a stellar move to show them your language abilities and write a kick ass essay, the schools you are going to apply should be no problem. 4 languages, thats cool.

That seems pretty solid to me. Isn't Intel only for seniors? How were you a semifinalist in grade 11? If you're really a semifinalist then with your stats your chances are extremely good.

Nice Application... Low Income is not a hook... One again, they rather accept a rich kid than a poor one, and with so many kids with the same stats, its pretty easy too... best of luck!

Oh, I am an international student and, from my observations people tend to get into ivy schools if your grades are descent enough with descent ECs...I guess I was wrong...Gosh it's really competitive there
then, what ARE the chances even though you have 4.0/2400???

i think ur chances r a bit better than some of us (since u've got 4.0 GPA and semifinalist @ intel) but languages isn't a hook and many of my friends know those 4 languages (and cantonese is just a dialect). Also, one of my senior friends got rejected by yale w/ a 4.0 GPA and silver in biotech at intel...she's not azn either...but she did get into cornell ^^!

I think that your probability of admission is fairly high (50% for Yale), although I'm not sure what you mean by "intel semifinalist." Only seniors can enter the Intel STS and the Intel ISEF does not have semifinalists.

Also I'm not sure what ali liu is talking about regarding intel. There is no biotech category at either intel competition and there is no silver medal. The awards are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Cantonese isn't a language, it's a dialect- all it is is a grotesque deviation of Mandarin with same writing haha

Cantonese is not a grotesque deviation of Mandarin with THE same writting. Cantonese uses the most traditional from of writting, not some dumbed down verison. Anyhow, Cantonese is not a hideous high-pitched squeal.

No. Cantonese is just a dialect. That means it's another form of speaking the same language- it is quite irritating to the senses btw. When you are speaking Cantonese, it sounds like you are trying to chew up a rock whereas Mandarin flows magnificiently. Why would yo learn traditional writing when there is a simplified one? Even people from Canton (the ORIGIN of the dialect) changed to simplified writing.

Please its just the dumb people who cant handle a few more strokes who changed to simplified. People only changed to Mandrin because they were FORCED to...not beacuse its 'flows magnificiently'. Cantonese is very sophiscated, its got nine tones as opposed to just four in Mandrin. Admit it, Mandrin is a dumbed down verison of original Chinese. Everyone in Hong Kong and Macau speak Cantonese and we're all quite glad to stick with it.

P.S. with regard to cantonese sounding like chewing a rock...At least it doesnt sound like choking on a rock. I'd rather chew on a rock than choke on a rock thank you. Mandrin people speaking is the most hideous thing ever. It actually sounds Japanese or Korean gone bad.

grrr...nonono! mandarin >>>>> cantonese.. and iwantfood is rite, our way of speaking is much more pleasant to the ear..cantonese sounds like ur always mad @ someone..

oh, lol, she got 2nd place then...bec she did go to intel and got 2nd, i got messed up bec the canadian national sci fair gives gold/silver/bronze..aha
