I like that thought much better than the other hypothesis – that this year’s early applicants were just lackluster.

It’s more positive.

This year’s SCEA pool was definitely not lacking. I don’t want to sound biased at all, but the number of research and scientific accomplishments in the pool was simply astounding.

Well maybe that’s part of the problem: they received too many applications for science majors. Perhaps Yale wanted some more humanities and art focused people and had trouble finding truly impressive applicants that fit the profile to fill up those spots, and so they’re waiting for RD (this is all speculation btw).

Makes sense. But Yale is trying to get more accomplished scientists in, since they are spending tons of money on their science program’s.

Granted, they only accepted 26 people less. A handful to be sure.

I don’t know, I get the feeling Yale typically draws a more “artistic” crowd than its peers, so I’d be surprised if that particular pool was lacking (relatively speaking, ofc) as a whole.

Applying RD. I would love to be here but when you’re applying to HYPSM it’s almost always a reach, and I realize that. I’m in to my safeties and was deferred from EA at my two “fit” schools so really, any acceptances from here on out are gravy.

@runnerxc yeah! Sounds good!

And now we the deferred move on to the regular round :p

Amen Canadian! I feel like Yale enjoys taking lots of diversity/money in the early round, much to the chagrin of us normal people. Suffice to say my school and our rival went 0 for 5, and we were all highly qualified applicants from respectable private schools. My counselor says they were rushed because of the hurricane, so they scooped up institutional needs and deferred most other people. Had to be our year…

We move on.

we never know what the adcoms are thinking, or why did something. Pretty hard to say. Anyway, have you people completed the supplement?

Another international here! From Mexico
Yale has been my dream school my whole life, it’s scary…
SO NERVOUS! FINAL TOUCHES TO MY SUPPLEMENT, AND THEN OFF IT GOES :S

Perhaps Yale wishes to strengthen it’s status in STEM fields by admitting a higher percentage of students who have to these types of achievements during the early action round? I can imagine that recent studies showing that the U.S. lags behind in math/science compared to other countries may have influenced Yale’s decision. These EA admits are identified as potentially being the most sought-after candidates by other highly ranked schools. This may explain the trend that CantConcentrate has pointed out.

Bestillandknow0, it’s just our luck, isn’t it? Haha. Everything bad always happens to the Class of 2013/2017 ;)

kcdecember, that’s exactly what I thought. Yale doesn’t spend millions (even billions) of dollars to develop STEM fields on campus to NOT accept people who are ultra-qualified in such fields. I had research (about 250 hours worth), but that’s nothing compared to people who placed in Intel/Siemens/published multiple abstracts. Thus, I was deferred (along with other reasons that I won’t know about).

Any deferrees here planning to send in an update? What are you putting about it? When?

So does this mean they’re accepting fewer humanities type applicants?
Or simply deferring them into the regular decision pool while they focus on securing impressive math/science-y type earlier in the process?

I want to write about residential colleges for my “Why Yale” (that is actually the part about Yale that is most appealing to me) but I feel like it’s a hackneyed topic. It’ll be hard to do without sounding like a brochure :P

kcdecember, do not worry. Yale will still accept its fill of humanities applicants.

runnerxc, if residential colleges appeal to you the most, don’t be afraid to write about them.

Eh don’t worry runner, the space available runs out before you even know it. Just focus on why the school is special to you in terms of what you look for in a university. I would mention several other aspects of Yale rather than looking at just one of them, because you want to make sure that the adcoms know you have many reasons for wanting to go, not just one. And I’m sure they know that we would say more if we could, but there’s no space.

CantConcentrate, I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve done a good bit of research, but I haven’t made it to Intel, been published, etc and I was deffered as well!

And I was also wondering if any deffered applicants were planning on sending an update?

I plan on sending my updated ACT scores. The only other thing I could possibly send would be a letter of recommendation from the one of the professors that I did research under…

ivygirl4, too bad just having simple research experience won’t suffice, haha. It’s just slightly disappointing. I was planning on sending an update, but I’m figuring out if I want to include anything else (extra rec from Chem teacher, writing sample, etc…).
