Yale Class of 2017 SCEA Discussion thread

i havent decided whether or not to apply SCEA. i think im gonna make up my mind once i visit
im a little afraid that Yale is going to be exactly like my high school, where everyone is snobby and exclusive. i live in a very affluent area, and everyone wears polos and topsiders to public school. im more comfortable in sneakers, jeans and a tshirt.
plus i feel like Yale is more focused on humanities than hard sciences, which is why im also considering EA to MIT. ill definitely end up applying to both schools eventually, but early definitely has its advantages
ive spent my summer doing research at NIH and working at a summer camp in WV

I understand why you might be worried about that, but I can assure you that, at least in my experience, that is absolutely not the case. I have interacted with many Yale students, not only while touring the first time but also while spending the summer there doing research with a chem group, and none of them were snobby or exclusive. Rather, they were all very nice, friendly, inclusive, and helpful. I haven’t noticed anything unusual about the dress, which means to me that it was normal and that there wasn’t anything unusual to be noticed.
Yale might not be quite on the level of your MIT-type schools, but it is definitely a very high quality science/research university. There are over 800 labs that FRESHMAN are allowed to work in, and the science departments are very strong. While it isn’t “focused,” per say, in the sciences, there definitely isn’t any deficiency in the field that should cause any flags, red or otherwise, to be raised.

what does everyone have on their plates for the fall? I’m in the most rigorous schedule I’m allowed to take at school (including a night course), captaining the science team, tutoring multiple individuals, continuing my work in the lab at Yale (10hrs/wk), Diving (10hrs/wk), and Dancing (8hrs/wk), not to mention college applications.

yeah I’m pretty busy as well-- most rigorous courses, VP of a state organization, president of two clubs, editor of the yearbook, student council rep, cross country, and finishing up my summer research project (on my computer, not in the lab anymore). And the apps. My common app is pretty much done though! Still chipping away at the Yale supplement. I’m having trouble choosing a topic for the supplemental essay.

On the topic of what you were just saying, Godric, one of the reasons I want to go to Yale so bad is that my mentor from this summer has a close colleague at Yale in my research area of choice (computational biology). She said she’d set me up with him ASAP if I were to go to Yale. Now just to get in… haha.

Happily, I have been accepted to attend an Amherst Diversity Open House! (A bit surprising, as I am not 1st gen, not low income, and not URM). That’ll be exciting, but I’ll definitely still be doing SCEA to Yale.

Can you apply to Yale SCEA and a non-binding early action program somewhere else like Georgetown?

Haha, I’d been staying away from this thread because making it CC official just felt uncomfortable. But yes! Yale SCEA leggooooo.
Also I thought I’d revive this. How far have you guys gotten? I’m an awful procrastinator - I’ve mapped out my main CommonApp and approached teachers about my recs. My testing’s done, so really I just have to wait til the Hemingway spirit strikes me so I can churn out awesome essays.

De, read the website, it’s very clear; there’s a reason for the S in SCEA.

retro, my commonapp is pretty much done but my Yale supplement needs a decent amount of work.

Hi guys! After a lot of consideration, I’ve decided to apply to Yale early, and I’m super excitedddd  How are you guys’ Yale apps going? I’ve finished my Common App and am well on my way through my Yale essays, but unfortunately I’m not done testing :S
I plan to major in ChemE, any fellow engineering majors here? :)

SCEA-r here. I wish everyone the best of luck! It’s so unreal that we’re about to apply already.

:)

On the yale website it says, “You may apply to any public institution at any time provided that admission is non-binding.” I live in New York, and I want to apply to UVA, UMich, UNC and William and Mary early. According to the website it says “any” non-binding public institution.

However on the common app I found a pdf describing the early action processes for the SCEA schools (HYPS), and it said for Yale you could only apply to public instituions in your home state early action.

I am very confused, as it seems the Yale site contradicts the common app information. I am planning on sending in my Yale application soon and also these other public schools, so would really like to hear some answers back.

I believe it used to be strictly your home state but was changed to allow any public institution. I would call Yale admissions and confirm though.

The CA has not updated Ys new policy; for the past few years they have permitted only non-binding IS publics but this year changed it to include all non-binding publics.

Just went to an info session–I was told that this year you CAN apply to any non-binding Public school, in or out of state!

Debeckbeck, you said – “I live in New York, and I want to apply to UVA, UMich, UNC and William and Mary early. According to the website it says “any” non-binding public institution.”

-- You should know, W&M is Early Decision and it IS binding. In other words, if you apply there, you commit to go there. UVA is Early Action, which just means you are considered early and get your in/out/deferred before RD. I don’t know about the others, but be careful; just because it’s a public university doesn’t mean it’s non-binding on THEIR end.

UMiich is also EA so it is non-binding.

Hi!
I heard that if you are going to apply for financial aid, it is better to do RD than EA.
Is that true ? Is that true of Yale too ?

I think that may be true with some schools who may not be as generous with Fin Aid (that way you can compare offers) but you will not find a school with better financial aid. Harvard and Yale are pretty close but unless you are looking for merit aid (which they don’t offer) there is no financial reason to wait for RD if it is truly where you want to attend.

It is not true for Y or any school. You will receive the same FA package whether you apply EA or RD.

Do not confuse EA and ED, ED is binding and you will not be able to compare FA packages to other schools. But EA is non-binding so you don’t make a decision until May and so can compare FA packages with RD schools.

Just made the decision along with my counselor to apply SCEA! So nervous since if I don’t get in (which I, like everyone else, am not expecting to) I’ll have to wait until March/April to hear back from other options.

@entomom and @Kdog044

Relieved to know that , thank you for the replies . :)
