Yale Class of 2018 RD Discussion Thread

We’ll, being on this website on Yale thread automatically makes us nerds, also it’s a great way to pass the time. Go Augustus =;

:-B

@matrixsurgeon I just read a 500-page historical fiction book on Madame Tussaud… it was great. :smiley: Oh yes, and if you’re into the Civil War, check out Bernard Cornwell’s “Nathaniel Starbuck Chronicles”. It’s pretty much my FAVORITE historical fiction series!!

Oooh, World War I? Don’t meet many WWI buffs… I’m actually pretty interested in it, too - even wrote a short story set during that time… Which reminds me - do any of you write? (I’m working on a few historical fiction pieces right now, actually)

Anyone here read a lot of Marx’s stuff? The guy was a ideological genius, even most of it was pretty impossible to apply to society. Plato and Kant are my favorites though. I have read and reread their pieces and everytime you learn something new.

Ceasar ended the republic bro, I mean, guys’s a genius, top 5 all time in terms of just consolidating power, but his destruction of a system so beautiful, that so many people died to defend, just makes him unforgivable.,

Check out the Century Trilogy by Ken Follet!! Three books, 1000 pages each, about WW1, WW2, and Cold War. All through the lives of 5 interrelated families! Absolutely my favorite!!

Many of history’s greatest leaders were evil, primarily due to the nature of the power they had. But that doesn’t take away from the overall effect they had on their countries and how they went down in the history books. Caesar, Hitler, Stalin-Lenin Combo, French and British Kings, etc.

@jackson61

Yup, I’m actually working on a play. It’s about Toussaint L’Ouverture and the Haitian revolution, this guy was a modern Anibal, magnificent general, and to think where the country is now after his efforts. It’s a tragedy, needless to say.

@TrinidadJames22 I actually went when I was young; Athens was wonderful but it was kind of sad how everything was built around, though. Crete, however, was still beautiful. No Turkey for me, though - half of my ancestors were killed by Turks in the genocide O.o

@Jackson61 I find WWI fascinating! I particularly love the poetry that came out of it :)

@matrixsurgeon Thanks!! And I actually own a copy of the Communist Manifesto, though I haven’t started reading it yet. I’ve got an idea for a historical paper that’s partially based on the CM… won’t give it away just yet ;)

Man this thread just making me wanna go to Yale even more, If I even tried to talk about this stuff with my Friends I get shut down.

AHH you people are so quick at posting and I’m on my phone - I can’t keep up! O.O

@TrinidadJames22 yep, same here… History is NOT a well-loved subject at my school :(

@TrinidadJames22 Awesome! I look forward to watching it on the stage someday ;)

@jackson61 My school is almost all science and math, I was literally the only person doing history, Self studied. Hopefully from the stange to the screen B-)

EXACTLY the same situation. Exactly. The same. Situation. :(( History needs more love

You should definitely read the Communist Manifesto!! It is really really unique and a great piece to read. Its not hard to believe why so many people made an effort to turn countries using that as a guideline, it was that attractive of an idea. But what really saddens me is how people confuse Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, China, and Soviet Union as examples of Communism. At the very base, those countries were never communist at all. Marx’s Communism was very different than most of the attempts made in history. His version never included the idea of a dictator or supreme leader.

I’m planning on being a Cog. Sci. major. I can’t wait to dig into Psych. It’s not much of an option at high school. Already took AP Psych.

@TrinidadJames22
My school is very similar!! Everyone is so focused on science and math. Literature and history don’t get enough love. History and Literature is very relevant in my opinion, contrary to what some claim.

My school is independent and is trying to be really progressive and is pouring all of its money into STEM classes and doesn’t really seem to care about history… they also cancelled the popular French programme and replaced it with Chinese, which is kind of failing. It’s kind of depressing.
