Yale Class of 2018 SCEA Discussion thread

If you’re honest and consistent you have nothing to worry about.

@ perry989: I got my Eli account just under three weeks after I submitted my application. I would expect that you will be getting it later this week or sometime next week. Hope that helps!

@classicchip thank you! That has made me feel much more relaxed :)

I am also wondering about the additional information. Can I put additional activities and awards in the additional information box or is that very unfavorable? (specifically, most of it is art awards that I wish to show for my art ability)

That is what my son did - put his additional activities and honors/awards in the “additional information” section.

Does Yale get your first quarter grades?

I don’t think so. If you get defferred, then your first semester grades will be sent to them for the regular decision round.

So you guys all put stuffs in the additional info box? I thought it is meant for qualifications of environments…Anyway, does it matter if I just left it blank?

Hi milkweed, I think so.

And also, is there a REA agreement? I don’t remember signing any. Or is the agreement presented in one of the boxes we should check?

There’s nothing to agree to like there is with ED.

Do you guys think there’s a point in putting down smaller awards if you already have awards that clearly demonstrate your interest/capacity in those areas?

I certainly have other awards that I could put down (say awards from the regional science fair which is the biggest in Canada) and that might free up space for my EC descriptions.

I also have stuff like the ACS Silver Test Tube award from freshman year and some AP Scholar award. It seems redundant, though my other competitions are applied science vs pure science knowledge. OTOH, international students are already quite competitive and I feel like if you are a solid candidate, you probs are already best in your region.

@milkweed

Yale’s finaid FAQ for prospies says “Because recommended submission dates are guidelines, if your application is late by a day or week you may still have a completed award before 6 weeks.” Additionally, “There is no deadline for applying for financial aid for prospective students. We recommend that you have your application complete by the suggested submission date. This ensures that Yale will have adequate time to process your application. If you cannot meet the suggested submission date please complete your application a.s.a.p.”

Hope that brings some peace of mind!

I have a question that was partially answered by T26E4.

So I’m getting an additional recommendation from a tenured univ professor but he may send it in to the admissions office up to one week late. If they receive it after they’ve read my file, will they go back and reread my file and my rec and do another holistic evaluation?

Who can really say, Mario? If your file is moved ahead, then it’ll be read. If your file has been cut/rejected, the additional doc may be read but may not do anything. Anything on this side of the admissions office door would only be conjecture. Good luck

I have a little question regarding the November SAT scores. I got a pretty low score (Yale-wise) on my first try (2200), so I’m retaking the test tomorrow. I know the website says that Yale accepts November scores for early action applicants, but what if they’re done reading my file by the time the scores come in? Will they reconsider my application if I get a higher score? I’m pretty worried about CR, where I got 690, hoping to bring that up to over 750.

Well you can state on common app which tests you are planning to take. Maybe they will hold off on reading applications that are missing november scores. Just a guess, though

Since they say they consider Nov scores for EA, they will look at your new scores.

Hey guys, my Yale supplement is 604 words. Would they cut down the extra 104 words or what? Would it still allow you to submit the app? Thanks.

Y requests fewer than 500 words. Even if you are able to submit, 100+ over the limit is too much. Edit.
