Yale Class of 2020 applicants

@Xboxgamergirl ok I’ll call them tomorrow. You’re always enthusiastic to answer everyone’s questions, thanks :)>-

@zacle1234 , hahaha. You’re welcome! \m/

was poking around (a.k.a. obsessing) and saw that QuestBridge applicants find out their decisions tomorrow… does that mean that the first members of Yale Class of 2020 will be notified tomorrow? How does QB work?

@16elir Yes, QuestBridge applicants will be notified tomorrow. Finalists get to rank up to 12 of the 36 partner colleges (Yale, Princeton, USC, etc.) in hopes of being “matched” to one of them. Finalists can only be matched to one school, though. The one highest on their list.
Here’s a theoretical list

  1. Yale
  2. Stanford
  3. UPenn

If the student gets into both Yale and UPenn, they’ll only ever know they got into Yale because it’s the school that’s highest on their list that accepted them. They’ll never know if I got into Stanford or Princeton.

Hope this helps!

TWO WEEKS FROM TOMORROW. :open_mouth:

Just a general question. What does it mean to have a hook?

@Xboxgamergirl A hook is something that makes the admissions office look twice at your app. It literally “hooks” them in, and it makes you a much more interesting applicant. Hooks can be anything from being a URM to winning the Intel Science Fair.

So I was the first female Indian participant at an international competition and I won third place (athletic related).is that a hook?

My second teacher reccomendation was just turned in (I assigned over a month ago). Yale’s email said this wouldn’t hurt me, but I’m a bit worried - any takes?

As long as they got it @ShawnLooch , you should be good. Remember, the deadline for supplementary materials is tomorrow. You are safe in all possible ways. I dont think they would have read your app without you not having a rec

@Xboxgamergirl That sounds pretty impressive to me, and considering that very few applicants would have something like that, I’d call it a hook.

@ShawnLooch I agree with Xboxgamergirl. And Yale knows that it is most certainly not your fault that the recommendation was not submitted. No worries.

Cool, I have a hook you guys

In regards to the QuestBridge applicants, are they considered separately from regular applicants? I have several QB applicants from my school. If one or two of them get in, will it hurt my chances of getting in regular early action?

And do you guys believe that thing with Yale limiting acceptance to 2 students per school?

@strideforward , no, that’s demonstrably not the case. DS small HS (100 grads) had 3 attend his year (and perhaps more admitted, but I don’t know).

@strideforward if that were the case, I’d be set. I may be the only applicant in several counties :)) :))

@Xboxgamergirl Sorry but that’s not considered a “hook”. People with hooks are “must-haves” – recruited athletes, development kids, some URMs, super scholars, celebrities.

@strideforward I can attest to you 100% that Yale has no quota at yours or any other HS

@T26E4 , thanks for your opinion! I appreciate it! Honestly, it doesn’t really matter cause its not like I can do anything about it!!

@T26E4 I see that you’re pretty familiar with the Yale admission process. Do you know how much being a legacy candidate helps? If at all? And how about being Hispanic, does that give you a boost? Thanks.
