Long question short, should i retake my 33 ACT for EA at Yale? My school records and activities and awards are above average for a CCer (national merit, 4.62 weighted, 3/560, etc.) but my SAT is fairly low (2190), so should i retake my ACT to like counteract the effects of my SAT?

Do you have exceptional ECs, national honors, a recruitable sport or legacy status? If no, retake, but you'll still have only a small chance at Yale.

Agree with suze. For the record, 2006 admit rate at Yale - 8.6%. EA rate only slightly higher as I recall.

EA was 17.7% for Admission to Class of 2010

No boost for EA as Yale says over and over. The EA applicants are athletes, legacies and other special interests which makes the acceptance rate seem higher.

To tell you the truth, it doesnt matter, i have known kids with perfect ACT's and SAT's of 2300+ who have not got in, so luck is involved when only 8% are admitted. But apply there since you have median scores mean you have the same chance as the majority do.

It matters. Retake.

Huge difference in EA. Read The Early Admission Game. It has only gotten worse. With Harvard and Princeton dropping EA, who knows what it will mean next year, but for this year we have to assume it is business as usual. Yes, the 18% is deceptive due to hooks, but even the average high achieving student gets some boost. And yes, 33/2190 is low for Yale even with your other attributes. Unless your high school always sends multiple people to Yale, your rank won't buy your way in.

It really doesn't: I've know students with as low as 2050 get in EA. It's not the most important thing, especially if you have other things that make up for it, like stellar EC's.

And I know people with 2400 that got rejected. What's your point? We can both site cases that go against the norm. The norm however is that most people get accepted with stellar everything. Adcoms look for a way to differentiate. This is one way. And by the way, the 2050s are the URMs, athletes, and other hooks in most cases.

yeah i understand what everyone is saying. i honestly don't expect to get in, but i just didn't want to completely embarrass myself in front of the admission panel, so i figured, i should at least retake the ACT to get a more 'acceptable' score for Yale. i guess it's too late to decide now because i registered at 11:30 last night. so thanks anyway.

but regardless of this act ordeal...what constitutes STELLAR hooks? i worked at like 4 labs at washu med., i play a sport, i've been in our city's youth orchestra a couple of years, but those are all pretty asian anyways. so i guess for an ASIAN, what is stellar?

hm, for an asian, STELLAR is being AWESOME at sports other than tennis or track.

An Asian that's a star football player, now that's STELLAR.

no but seriously, a 33 is perfectly fine for yale. When you get in the range of 2200-2400 and 32-36, it's really ALL about the essays and ECs (mostly about the essays since they want to know how much you really want to go to Yale).

Work on your essays the most I think. After applying, make sure you pray to god every night (jk...well no not really).

i believe middle 50% act is 32-34. i could be wrong.
