Yale EA or Brown ED?

I don't know which one to act on. I like both schools so much, but if I had a higher chance of getting into one program, which would it be?

GPA: 3.8954/4.0 UW, 4.65 W
Rank: 10/451
AP's: 10 AP's total in just about every subject. I'm taking all of the science AP's available. Junior: 5,5,5,4; Sophomore: 3,1 (in bio and a terrible, terrible day...hope it won't kill me because I did ace the class). Senior year I'm taking 5 more AP's.
ACT: 29
Hook: Male Hispanic, gay (don't think that helps), 1st generation American
SAT/SAT II: not submitting (650 USH, Math I)

Laureate Candidate '12: The most demanding diploma in our county that requires students to write a lengthy research paper, present it to a panel, and possibly gain scholarship money. The qualifications for getting it are also hardcore. My topic, "This Research Has Been Censored," a look at censorship in film and literature.
Major: Chemistry and Theatre

EC's: President of drama club, president of International Thespian Society, president & founder of science club, president of gay-straight alliance, historian for glee club, academic team member, Key Club member, Laureate Club, and National Honor Society member.
Volunteer: student director for children's drama camp two years in a row (256 hours), countless hours building sets for the school's plays, bake sales, surgical shadowing, student tutoring (every subject), and fundraisers. I also co-created the first district wide dance for GLBT people for a safe gathering.

Awards: Superior, Excellent, and Superior ratings in monologues, excellence in small group musical, superior in duet musical, superior in solo musical, 2 superiors in one-acts at the district thespian festival, and the Florida State Thespian Festival in 2010-11. Drama Department Award at my high school two years in a row, Academic Recognition Award (3 years so far), Best Thespian 2010,11 (school), National Honor Thespian 2011 (school), finalist for Lemelson-MIT project (science club).

Recommendations: Chemistry teacher, AP English teacher, and Drama teacher of four years. Even though it's not recommended for the third, I'd like to think she'd write quite differently about me, and reveal a different aspect.

Brown would definitely be the easier of the two to get in. Its acceptance rate is higher, and plus it’s ED, which gives you an admissions advantage, whereas early action is generally regarded as having no such advantage.

For college admissions purposes, 1st gen refers to ‘first generation to attend college’ (as determined by each college based on college history of parent information), not ‘first generation in the US’. Of course, it is possible for an applicant to be both, but only 1st gen to college is considered a tip factor.

Sorry but your chances are pretty slim for both schools because of your ACT score. Maybe try taking it again (the Oct one) or apply to both schools regular.

^^^Yes. There are many Hispanics with high ACT & SATs these days. An improved ACT would be your best tactic at this point.

Without a higher ACT, I’d suggest you choose the Brown ED option-- Yale will just likely defer you to the regular round, then your competiton increases more.

fauve is pretty much on the money. HOWEVER, have you visited them? They are both excellent but have their own character. At least talk with students at each school before you pick one or the other as your ED/EA.

I’d say Brown. It’s easier to get into, for one thing. And also, I was there for nearly a month and I loved it, so yeah. Get your ACT up to 33 to exponentially increase your chances haha. While the rest of your application’s to-die-for (High-achieving URM), that score will really hold you back… To be truly competitive at either of these schools, you need a 33, even being a URM. Study study study, my friend.

Chance me guys?(: And I know, alot of my reaches are uber reaches, I just really like them, so yeah, more of a closure application for some…=P

Apply ED only if the school is your definite first choice, and you do not mind not being able to compare financial aid offers.

Note that chemistry’s job and career prospects are not that great at the bachelor’s degree level. Chemical engineering is better in this respect.

You will have a better chance getting into Brown.

Accepted to Brown PLME! :)

Congrats!!

Get that ACT up. Based on the talent you claim to have based on your scores/rank, you should have no trouble getting up to 32-34.
