something i dont understand..if yale is ones #1 choice..and they love it and all and they got accepted..then why apply to other places..especially harvard..is it to prove something?

maybe to compare financial aid

that makes sense..but is that why most ppl do it?

it's a good reason, but I'm sure there are others out there who do it for other reasons....

AllureNY86 -- No hard feelings! :)

chidimma -- Thanks for the "happy birthday!"

sexydesi -- Financial aid is a reason for me, but it's not the deciding factor. My high school is fairly new and the founder wants to add more top colleges to the list of acceptances, so she paid for my extra applications. I wouldn't be applying to those other three schools otherwise. Sounds selfish at first, but I guess I know where she's coming from...

hmmm... yea i think that's really selfish. not you- her, it's not like you can say no or anything... it's just really stupid that you don't have an interest in going, and you could be taking someone else's spot who really wants to go... (especially if financial aid isn't really important for you...)

I did have the choice of doing it or not. And I did have an interest in going to Harvard or Princeton. They were already on my list of schools and the apps were finished and ready to be sent out if Yale was a no. But since Yale was a yes, she still wanted those apps to go out, so she paid for it. It's not costing me anymore time or effort (I'm not doing any interviews) so I thought, hey why the hell not? And if I'm accepted to one or both, it would be nice to have a couple acceptances under my belt, just in case something comes up... though I doubt anything will. It's not like I'm completely disinterested in going to either of these schools. I love these other schools; that's why I was already applying to them in the first place. I haven't sent in my response to Yale yet, and I won't until I hear back from Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford.

And this whole "taking someone else's spot" thing... If I'm accepted, I wouldn't be taking any specific person's spot. Colleges have a yield, so they know that a certain percentage of acceptees will turn them down.

My school doesn't rank; my essays were great (the main one contrasting my U.S./U.K. upbringing - i moved to L.A. when i was 12); my recs should have been awesome; my interview could not have been better, we just talked about politics the whole time i was totally in my element, especially because i was essentially applying on the card that my bicontinental upbringing gave me a refreshing perspective for poly sci (my intended major)

anyhoo that was that - thought this might be of interest to some people
