Yale Eli Whitney Program 2022

I just completed my interview. Very low-key, I was asked to expand on my history, why I was interested in my major, how I handled potential conflicts in team-based settings, and what I thought about liberal arts education. I thought it went very well overall.

Who interviewed you?

Alfie Daniels

Awesome. I’ve heard she interviewed a lot of people!

Anyone had interview with Rebecca Tynan yet?

How long was the interview? Were there any questions that threw you off the hook? Was it mostly what you wrote on your application or was it more of what would you do at Yale?

I am super glad that your interview went good buddy!

I know of someone on the discord that interviewed with Tynan

Can you send me a link to the discord group?

I had my interview today. It went really well and lasted a little over an hour. Now all of the hard work is over and we wait.

Nice! how did it go? any gotcha questions or was it more like a friendly conversation? Was there anything you wished you prepped beforehand?

It went really well. It did feel like more of a conversation. While it was professional, it was not formal and we both laughed a lot. I was asked about my resume and life experience, how I think I could best contribute to the classroom at Yale being a non-traditional student, what experience from my life has influenced and inspired my area of study, why did I think I was a good fit for the Eli Whitney Program, what was my favorite job/project from my work experience and why… there’s more but that is what stands out. We actually covered a lot.

Some of the things that I mentioned on my application that I assumed would get brought up were not even touched upon. I wasn’t asked about the gaps in my education or any of the struggles that I overcame between high school and now. Many schools that I’ve spoken to tend to ask questions to non-traditional students that indicate they’re looking for holes in your story or trying to figure out “what’s wrong with you that you couldn’t get it right the first time…” I felt very accepted and welcomed and like I was being interviewed from the stand-point of I was exactly where I was supposed to be and everything was happening right on time. I never once felt like I was being asked a “gotchya” question.

I did prepare by looking up the specific educational track I was interested in and which faculty advisors were related to the senior thesis in the program. I also looked up various research centers and cultural centers related to my major that I’d like to be apart of if I were to be accepted and had specific details and names of people and projects that interested me.

Thank you! Super helpful

You’re welcome. When is your interview and who is it with?

It was today with Dara Norwood. It went okay but I’m not sure how I did

Anyone know what day the decisions came out last year?

They will come out May 20th this year. I received an email from the admissions office to confirm my address that also had the decision date. The email said all applicants that had done an interview would get a similar email.

Right, key word “by.” I think last year it was the 18th (3rd Tues in May), so I’m wondering if it’ll drop on the 17th.

Didn’t catch that! I thought it said on lol, I guess we will have to wait and see

What does it matter anyways haha… fun to speculate but at least we know we’ll for sure know our fate in 2 weeks
