Hello everyone! I know this is really early as the application doesn’t open until November! Just wanted to start a thread and see if there is anyone else applying or considering applying!
I am an active duty veteran with a 4.0 in 20 credits of college (Before Joining the military) and 9 credits with a 4.0 while in the military! I have heard GPA isn’t everything, and I have also heard that being a veteran isn’t incredibly beneficial, like some believe.
I applied last year, but I’m not applying again until 2020. I got rejected for not enough recent coursework, but I would like to follow this thread anyways.
Another thing, I’ll have 12 credits and be registered for another 12 at a cc by the time I apply. None of my courses are honors but I’m pretty sure I’ll have a high gpa. Do you think the credits will matter? From what I know Yale doesn’t have a minimum but rather a maximum of 18 credits… Please let me know!
@ambitiouslicious I am a current Eli Whitney (in the 2018 cohort), and I graduated from community college prior to being admitted at Yale. I had only taken 1 honors course at cc. You should be fine.
@IndirectProofs Just curious how much coursework you applied with? I’m not sure if I have enough coursework and wondering if I will be applying too early without enough recent credits (I have lots of credits scattered inconsistently throughout the last 12 years). Did you submit SAT scores and do you know if these scores help at all?
Hi everyone! I am happy that this thread exists, I am so excited that my chance to apply has finally come - I am trying not to let my excitement overwhelm my application haha! @zoonbhrogers I am thrilled that you’re still around and would love to know more about how your transition from cc to Yale has gone?

In February 2017 I was in a very bad accident and left with a severe concussion resulting from a serious fall. Over the next few months I experienced severe PTSD and psychosis stemming from the fall. My family and I decided that for my own personal health I needed to take time off and I moved to Cupertino California to recover from the injury. In August of 2017 about 6 months after the accident I decided to take a chance and I enroll in the local college at De Anza CC. Within 3 months I found myself extremely enthusiastic about learning for the first time in honestly 15 years. Challenging the Banking Method most of my classes opened me up to a new world of existential thinking and this sparked a fire in me.
Fall 2017 - Spring 2019 Over the next 6 quarters i accumulated 120 hours of credit and on a path to double major participating in multiple honors and scholar programs and local community services.
Story is much more complex but those are my basic cred…
Best of luck to all and go for it you miss every shot you do not take!!!
Hey guys. I am thinking about applying this year, but also weighing the pros and cons of waiting until following year (Fall of 2020). I will have completed my Associate’s by then, I am about half way through right now… The website gives emphasis to submitting SAT/ACT scores which I have not taken. I cannot decide if I should wait and take them over the next year and apply then, or just go for it without. Thoughts? Experiences? I have read other threads and can’t seem to come to a decision. Good luck to all on this amazing opportunity.
Welp, in lieu of responses, I am just going to go for it. Given the “fall only” entrance, applying this year makes the most sense for me. Good luck to all, I would love to hear about every one else’s experiences (and, if you are anything like me, stomach churning anxiety, ha.) Cheers.
@mamabear336 Why not apply this year? You have nothing to lose and if you don’t make it you can always apply again? That said - I hope you make it this time around! You can do the thing!
I’d like to apply again this year, but I am starting to feel like Yale isn’t the right place for me. For example, a huge part of my application is the fact that many of my math solutions have gotten accepted into different math journals, but Yale doesn’t even give you any place to upload any extra material, and I can’t really put that on my resume. I’m applying to the Davis Scholar program at Wellesley instead, since they have a top pure mathematics program. I really hope that I’ll stand out there.
I had my heart set on Yale, but I don’t really know why I didn’t get an interview. I honestly feel like my essays were not very good, and I’ve improved on that a lot. But I still don’t have any SAT scores, and that’s another main reason why I’m not applying again.
@ambitiouslicious The guy I talked to who was accepted said that they like it if you have most of the credits done already. I had A’s in every math class at the community college, but I didn’t have foreign language or SAT scores, and I had a very back college record from a long time ago. I think I might have done better if I had an SAT score and more recent coursework. But, lesson learned!
I’m excited for all of you applying. It’s nice to watch the thread and just be a support instead of an applicant. But I don’t want to crowd the thread with too much of my posts
@RainbowBritey I am indeed going to apply this year. Just got confirmation that 2 of my 3 recommendations have been submitted, in fact! If I don’t get in this year, I will most likely transfer elsewhere, i.e. Columbia GS, NYU, etc., or else, specifically, top tier schools in NYC that offer Spring Transfers (and, even more particularly, those with programs for nontraditional students. I can’t imagine being accepted anywhere when put up against traditional competitors.)
@IndirectProofs I understand your frustration. I do not even have nearly as much accomplishment to report as you, and I feel like the application is doing me a disservice. Where exactly do I explain everything I went through that effected my academic life for so long? 600 words to explain my experience? Good god. Translating one’s self to paper is rough.
That being said, I hope you still at least try. Your credentials, to me, are stellar. If I did not get in because the space was needed for you, that would make all the sense in the world. I wish you luck with any program you endeavor.
Right now, my concentration is getting all my supplemental materials in on time. My GED will potentially take WEEKS to come in the mail (I needed a new, unopened copy), and my old high school…sucks. To be fair, I am asking them to dredge up paperwork from a decade ago, lol.
Hoping to see this thread heat up a bit soon, because I already feel like I am going to pieces! I’m not going to repost my stats, but if you go to my profile, I had posted a “Chance Me” thread with all the good stuff.
