Yale Eli Whitney Program Fall 2019!!

@sproutedchiapet there is a post somewhere in my history of a million posts with exhaustive and somewhat dull stats, the basics are as follows -
4.0 CC Transfer, completed college honors, no SAT’s, immigrant who recently attained dual citizenship, parent, non-traditional student in my 30’s. PTK president, started another club on campus, some advocacy work at campus and state level, independent research in my field (presented at a handful of conferences), work published in literary journals but no academic journals as yet, lots of volunteer work but mostly in areas not directly related to my field of study, worked full time while studying (sometimes a few jobs at a time).

Hey everyone. I applied to the Eli Whitney program as (what I thought would be) an extreme long shot, so I was pretty surprised to get an interview invite over email yesterday morning. I’m nowhere near the northeast, but I think I may still fly in and do the interview in person. Also, I’ll second the above question asking about the ratio of interviewees to slots. I know at least one other person at my jc also got one.

I’m excited that this thread is livening up! @trg2010 that is super impressive - your JC must be doing a great job! There are two interviewees from my college too but we are married to each other so it is a bit different haha!

Do you mind posting your stats @trg2010

Also, congratulations to everyone that has received an interview so far. Let us know how the interview goes, best of luck!

Hey guys!

I just received an interview email a couple of days ago.

As for my background, I’m a Marine veteran who served as an operations consultant. During my enlistment, I attended community college (3.9 GPA with about 60 credits) and spent my leave periods solo-backpacking in Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America. I’m looking to major in anthropology, Latino studies, or economics.

@RainbowBritey Haha, wow, that’s gotta be a pretty unique situation from Yale’s end. Also incredibly impressive for the both of you! Good luck and here’s to hoping you both make it in.

@randomandwitty Long story short, veteran who separated back in 2016. I moved across the country to California to be near family and started at a small community college.

69 units complete, 4.0 GPA.

Lots of activism and volunteering in the vet community. I work study at the school’s veteran resource center, tutor there part time, and I’ve been to Sacramento a few times with some other vets to speak with lawmakers and basically lobby for more cash for CCC vet centers.

I was surprised to get an interview request because, for one thing, I’ve heard from others that vet status doesn’t help as much as you might think. But then again, the other interviewee from my school is also a veteran, so who knows?

Also, I’m a prospective engineering major, so the vast majority of my coursework has been in math and science. Given Yale’s liberal arts focus, I didn’t think I had enough humanities or social science classes. I did get a pretty glowing letter of recommendation from one of my writing professors, so that also may have helped.

@trg2010 Impressive background, congrats on the interview. Did you take the SAT/ACT and if so do you mind sharing your scores. Same question to you @AndyG130 did you take the SAT/ACT, scores?

let me know how the interview goes, i’m hoping to hear back this week, but I doubt I’ll get once since I’m already a student at Brown.

@trg2010 @AndyG130 also, did either of you apply to Brown this year?

@randomandwitty why do you want to leave Brown?

@RainbowBritey I don’t want to leave Brown, I love it here. With that said, Yale has more research opportunities in my area of interest…and there’s also some personal health/family reasons…but honestly I’d be perfectly happy to stay at Brown, just thought I’d give it a shot.

@randomandwitty I also applied to Brown’s RUE program. I submitted some old high school 2012 SAT scores that were pretty mediocre. That is probably my weakest point. However, when I visited Columbia, Brown, and Yale, I was told that my recent academic success would suffice or that scores were not mandatory. Not sure why I was selected for an interview, but I did have 3 solid letters of rec from professors and a former officer. Besides my vet status and world travel experience, I’m also central american and a first generation college student, so maybe that helped? I mean at this point nearly everyone that applies to Yale is qualified. It really just depends on who looks over your application and if something in your life experience or goals stands out to them. A shot in the dark, but the application was free and the worst they can do is say no.

let me know if you end up at Brown, I’m sure I’ll see you at a RUE event. @AndyG130

Who did you all receive invites to interview from? Was it Rachel, or Patricia perhaps? Thanks in advance…

Being as I haven’t heard anything, I am going to assume I am no longer in the race. Congrats to all who received interviews! I am sure you worked very hard to be where you are today and this is a great reward.

@mamabear336 Don’t get discouraged. The EWSP website says that interviews will be conducted through early May. There is still time!!

Don’t be discouraged, if the unthinkable does happen, it just means that there are steps you need to take to make for a stronger application. I was told to take nonmath classes since I already have super strong math credentials. I’m still in the middle of taking their advice, but I know I still don’t have enough. She encouraged me to apply next year. So basically, I know it’s hard but it’s not the end if you don’t get an interview. It sucks, but there is a way to make your application stronger and have fun while you do it.

They still sending out sending out interviews. Someone I know got it today.

@mamabear336 Don’t lose hope! From what I’ve read on some threads: interviews get assigned over the first few weeks; they are sent throughout the week; and after they’re done they send out rejections early, usually with feedback.
I didn’t get one (yet?) either.

@IndirectProofs I’m happy to see you on this thread! My anxiety had me scouring previous threads for insight before giving in and making an account lol. I was rooting for you when reading last year. I am glad you’re keeping at it and being strategic because I really think that you will get into someplace you love

@mamabear336 I checked in with the person who initially emailed me to coordinate EWSP interviews today and they are still scheduling - don’t give up just yet.
