Hey everyone, I was wondering if I have any chance at yale engineering? I do know that it's not one of the best programs but I still want to try. I'll probably apply SCEA.

I'm a multiracial female, currently ending junior year, applying for environmental engineering class of 2015, and I go to a very competitive public school in CT.

GPA: 4.1 W 3.9ish UW
ACT: 33 (E 34, W 33, M 33, S 31)
SAT: not submitting
SATII: not submitting (not required for sending ACT)
Class Rank: My school doesn't rank, but top 10% at least
ECs:

-For the past year I have been writing a scientific paper on local water quality in my town; took measurements and testing in a local state funded lab with one other person and presented our findings last month to the town
-president of school's national ocean science bowl team for past 2 years
-For 2 years I have volunteered at my local aquarium on the weekends, running exhibits and teaching kids about marine life
-for 3 years I have been on my school's golf team
-this summer I am going to UPenn for a biomedical research program for 4 weeks, probably can get a recommendation from a professor if they like me

I know my chances are probably very slim and I'm just an average applicant, but if there's anything I can do to improve my chances from now until I apply (don't have much time left...) I'd gladly appreciate it :)

Oh and also, is it any sort of advantage to be applying for engineering there rather than to yale as a normal applicant (to something like english or history, or other sciences)? Is admissions to that program very competitive? Since all undergrad applicants apply to yale college, I can’t find anywhere an estimate of what the acceptance rate would be for undergrads applying specifically to engineering.

Sophomore year I took AP Bio - 5
This year (Junior year) I took 3 AP’s (Spanish, Environmental Sci., and World History)
haven’t got my scores back yet
Senior year I plan on taking 5 AP’s (Economics, Physics, Calculus, Statistics, and Gov)
I’m definitely going to try to boost my GPA starting in the fall with those classes

They don’t release rates for engineering applicants because - like you said - you’re admitted to the college and not a specific program. I don’t think engineering will give you a big boost but Yale is trying to draw more science people [they made a new publication specifically for science/engineering] and applying for a major that is underselected will not hurt. Nonetheless, I’m pretty sure people who put engineering as a major are admitted at a rate comparable to the overall college.

Your application is solid and I think you have a good a shot as anybody.
