I'm almost done with my college apps, Yale being my last. I want to do this one well! My idea for the extra essay basically involves using only quotes from songs I like to describe how much I love music. The idea and the structure would be mine, but the words would not be...I would cite everything at the end. Do you think this shows creativity, or is it risky to not use any of my own words?

That seems original and a good idea, but only if you structure it right, like using song lyrics in chronological order. So the opening sentence might be from an 1940s song and the ending one from a 2010 song. Otherwise it’s just random.

Artsy Yale would eat this up, but it’d be risky for most other schools

Great idea! Strikeb4ck has a great suggestion too. Make it so it is not just listing song lyrics. Intertwine them together so they tell as story. I read one once that was on this same vein and it was fantastic. Just be sure you get a little creative with this one.

I would really like to see this one when you’re done, if you don’t mind PM’ing it to me.

Thanks.

Thanks, everyone! I’m encouraged. Great suggestions – as it is now, I’m interweaving them so sentences are sort of combined to “tell a story” about how music has affected me and the way I think. It’s tough coming up with the right way to fit it all together, but if it works out, I’ll definitely send it to you, digmedia.
