Yale Fall 2010 Thread

I'm not sure if there was a previous tread for this year's cycle of Yale xfer apps, so I started this one. Post chances, questions about the application, reading of the essays, etc.

It's gonna be a long and arduous journey O_O

yah i know

why doesn’t Yale transfer credits for introductory courses???

^Where did you read that??

[Frequently Asked Questions | Transfer & Other Programs | Office of Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.yale.edu/admit/other/transfer/faq.html)

Lobzz,
To echo entomom, if you are accepted as a transfer, I’m pretty sure Yale will give you credit for whichever course you want to transfer as long as you can make a good case for it being similar to a current Yale course.

Has anyone started the application

You can’t yet. It’s available November 1st

Is GPA more important or SAT? Ooooor anything else??? Totally lost by the low admission rate…

^Which gpa are you referring to, HS or college?

Transferring as a soph or jr?

Have you read the first few pages of the sticky thread: Transfer Admissions 101?

anybody who has dreamt of yale since “before their parents were born”, this is the perfect place to meet :)

stats are welcome, personal profiles, just about anything should be fine. just so we could get to know each other (and skim through our competition ;))

any info that anybody has about uni will be much appreciated.

I’m applying through the Eli Whitney program. Stats: 6 years veteran of the U.S. Army, 2 combat tours in Afghanistan, 4.0 from community college (online). Considering taking the SAT again (my score from high school was 1270 on the old scale).

Yale is my biggest reach, obviously.

hey, im an undergrad student. at one of the best unis in the uk. sat this december, (hopeful for crackling scores)

yale is my aim, obviously.

This thread is being merged into the Fall 2010 Yale Transfer thread that was started earlier.

Here you go, entomom. I’m sorry I didn’t post this earlier, it’s just that I’ve been very busy with midterms. To rephrase, I was talking about the economics program in particular.

Off the Yale site.
"Economics Guidelines: Two “Problem” Types of Course

If you intend to get Yale credit for a course from outside Yale, you should avoid “core” economics courses and be very wary of pre-business courses.

Core Courses. The following courses from outside Yale tend to be a problem:

introductory microeconomics
introductory macroeconomics
intermediate microeconomics
intermediate macroeconomics
introductory econometrics, and
so-called “principles of economics” courses "

This is just crazy. I mean, I know Yale is hard to transfer to, but this is just saying “You need to take 400 level courses during freshman year and get a 3.8+ GPA to even be considered… oh, and there’s still a 99.6% chance you’ll get rejected.”

ooh, that’s no good. I’m taking intro econ&macro this year, but i’m doing very well (top 3 students my prof has this semester), and he’s got degrees from HYP. would yale accept a teacher’s letter when trying to transfer over an econ course regarding the rigor&student’s performance in the class?

i don’t plan to major in econ or any business-related field (maybe minor though), but i would like as many credits as possible to xfer over if, all gods and spiritual icons willing, i manage to get in.

if im trying to transfer from wharton, will that mean most of my credits wont transfer?

Thanks for getting back to this Lobzz, hope mid-terms went well. That’s good to know since many people take Intro economics classes their first couple of years. I’ll admit that I’m surprised and that it doesn’t make any sense to me either. Does the Y Econ Dept. think that they’re so great that Intro courses from any other school are vastly inferior??

My only experience is that my D had no problem with transferring all of her credits and she had at least a couple of Intro, 100 level courses, but none in Econ. A good friend who transferred at the same time found Y to be very generous. She had been at a school on the quarter system and Y accepted all her courses as if they were sem long.

rebel, you might want to give Y a call to clarify their policy. It says they ‘tend’ to be a problem, so that leaves a little wiggle room, but you want to be sure before you go through the effort of applying.

could anyone post the transfer rates of yale in 2009? especially the international ones

^ I listed this in post #1:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/784946-2009-transfer-rates.html</a></p>

My D told me that 3 of the 18 were Intl students.

…I don’t suppose it makes a difference if your Intro to Economics course is taught by a Yale alumn and you’re acing it?

Yale is my top choice, but I’d rather not drop $70-80 on a transfer app knowing it’s a futile exercise.

The earlier information about Intro Econ courses was concerning getting credit if accepted; taking an Intro Econ course at your current school won’t have an affect on admissions decisions.
