yale film studies (grad program)

is anyone in here in the film studies grad program or is planning to apply? they have alot of great information on the site and a friend has given me some insight but i would like to hear some more. i won't be applying for a few years but i'm really keen about it. incidentally, yale and ucla's film programs are the only two that interest me....so i'm going to focus on those two when the time comes.

thanks

............................................

Where are you going/looking for undergrad? I'm planning to study film starting next year as a freshman.

im gonna be a sophomore at indiana university-bloomington. im a journalism major. i know grad school is quite some time away but i need to prepare. plus, the more i learn about yale (and ucla), the more i fall in love. i'm originally from LA too...

If you are interested in the study of film history aesthetics etc, then Yale is good. If you want to make films, then buy yourself a digital video camera and hit the streets.

im interested in both aesthetics and filmmaking. but when it comes to actual filmmaking, i'm more interested in screenwriting.

Yale is not well known in the world of film studies. USC by far (this is coming from an NYU film kid so its hard for me to write this) outranks every other school in cinema studies in graduate studies. However, its basically impossible to get into. Columbia and NYU are both very strong, but not as strong as the regular film production school. Yale (and now Harvard with its new film studies graduate major) are still fledging programs...so a lot of people go there for the name rather then for the actual experience. My prof from U of M (I took some classes over there while dual-enrolled in high school) went to Yale for film studies before transferring to USC if that makes any difference.

However, the film studies program at Yale is much, much, much stronger than the undergrad film program which is in my opinion awful. Besides the outdate equipment, the department is so small and places a huge emphasis on theory over production. All my friends at Yale switched into the theater studies major, which they all love completely. But, if you're more interested in writing papers on theory then producing an actual film, then Yale undergrad could be great.

yea, i understand that yale (unlike usc, nyu, or columbia) is not a film school. i mean, a big part of the reason of why i'm so interested is because they'd pay for you if admitted. i also really like yale. i know i wouldn't be able to afford usc, nyu or columbia. so for production, i'm considering ucla, because i think it's the most affordable and equally prestigious film school. plus, i'm from LA. another thing...i do not like usc, at all.

Does anyone have perspective on the level of difficulty of double majoring in Film Studies and American Studies or English (or maybe something else, any suggestions on what could complement well?).

Bump.......

i've heard it's amazing. from the undergrads i know that are double-majoring and doing film studies, they complain that they aren't learning as much as they want. this is due to the grad students that are taking up all the awesome film studies classes.
