the name pretty much says it.. but how bad is the rivalry between yale and harvard? i know that at yale, you can buy "harvard sucks" t shirts.. but i think you can get those at any ivy.. is it just harvard that no one likes, or it is more cause yale and harvard are the two oldest colleges in the usa????

William & Mary is the second oldest, H is no. 1, Yale is no. 3.

How bad is the rivalry? Firstly, it’s based on tremendous respect of the other (at least from this Yalie’s point of view). With that in mind, the rivalry is pretty extreme (as Ivies go). Not a UMich-Ohio State or Florida-UGeorgia thing but it’s good – and fun. Lots of students know students at the other college.

One of my teachers who graduated from Harvard said “Yale thinks there’s a rivalry, Harvard doesn’t care about them.”

^ To that, I have to respond with this: [Yale Daily News - Harvard freshman operates Yale ■■■ site](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/university-news/2009/12/01/harvard-runs-yalefmlcom-■■■/)

Lies. I visited Harvard and the second people found out I was from Yale, I was shunned (they were joking of course, but they were all in on the rivalry revelry :)).

The Harvard affiliates who pretend Harvard doesn’t reciprocate the rivalry are typically the same people are who are responsible for making the environment there so inferior to that at Yale.

We don’t hate UofM all that much, OMG. That ESPN commercial with a UofM girl and an OSU guy (or vice versa) being in love was pretty gross though. Miscegenation, ugh.

Millancad: Your OSU guy should be so lucky.

thanks @t26e4 that helps… i didnt know william and mary was older than yale.

I was amused by the harvardrejects.org page. That’s really funny.

No doubt a Harvardian conspiracy.

I think just about nobody takes that rivalry seriously. It’s there, we’re aware of it, and it wouldn’t be wise for, say, a professor to declare their undying loyalty to harvard in front of a class of Yale students. But really, it’s not a serious or heated rivalry at all. Maybe once a year at the harvard-yale football game (the most celebrated athletic event of the year at Yale).

I think the fiercest harvard-yale rivalries are probably in faculty hiring and admissions… because both are very attractive universities that court many of the same people.

Witty response! :)
