Yale International Student Friendly??? Worth it??

I hope to get into Yale for Biomedical Engineering? Is it worth it considering I do have very good chances of getting into UPenn and JHU for instance. I plan on studying Biomed and I dont intend on pursuing Medicine.

My high-counselor said that Yale isn't really the best place for intl students like me. Is that true? I have always dreams of attending Yale but she shattered my dreams...

Please help me out...Thank you in advance!!!

Considering the international student population at Yale is not small, and it’s composed of amazing students, and Yale is known for caring for all its undergraduates-- what did your counselor say was unfriendly about Yale?

The counselor seemed to suggest that Yalies tended to look down upon international students racially due to “Imperialist” views. Considering that I come from an Asian family but having living in the Middle East all my life, he vehemently discouraged me and my parents. I am not totally convinced about his argument but now I am confused.

The counselor told me that traditionally Yale isn’t the “best” university forEngineering. Is that true?? Maybe UPenn is a “better” option?!? I am still inclined towards Yale for some reason. Plzz help me out!!

I think your counselor is showing his bias against so-called “imperialist” Yale. Ignore him. Even his use of the word should tell you something about his ability to rationally evaluate Yale. Sheesh.

Penn’s reputation for Engineering tops Yale but Yale’s other offerings make it a destination for many scientists/engineers. Best of luck to you.

I have no idea where your counselor got that impression about yale. Yale has a vibrant community of international students that contribute enormously to student life. Sometimes the international community can be a little clique-y/self segregated, but i have no idea why anyone would suggest that yale has ‘imperialist’ attitudes. Yale has a pretty uber-liberal campus that’s generally biased against arrogant/abusive political structures like imperialism. I think that criticism is foolish/baseless.

How ironic, I believe Edward Said (key thinker in post-colonialism, in Orientalism) was a professor at Yale.

Yale’s English departments and social science faculties are also seen to be on the cutting edge in terms of subaltern studies, gender studies etc (ie. ANTI-imperalism!).

Not to make generalities, or to be provocative, but in light of your coming from the Middle East - perhaps seeing the West as Imperialist is a cultural thing (ie. Edward Said seeing the “Other” but reverse I suppose), and not necessarily something specific to Yale?

Having met my area admissions officer, (She made the gruelling treck halfway across the world to where my country is) and hearing of Yale adcom’s willingness to travel to meet with international students, I sincerely believe that Yale very much seeks and values its international students.

Apart from that, a good friend of mine (intl) is at Yale and extremely happy there.

I too think that the argument put forward by the counsellor is foolish and unfounded (and perhaps reflecting cultural prejudices).
