Hey guys! So I recently applied RD for Yale’s class of 2020 and I was wondering some things about the interviews! I was wondering If any body had received an email for interviews yet or whatever… Let me know (and everyone else who applied) know!! Thank you and good luck to all
My son was contacted earlier this week for an interview. He finished his Yale app on 12/30. I think it depends on availability of alumni, it is a pretty big time commitment for them.
I received an email from an interviewer at 20:37. Yale interviews as many applicants as it has resources to do so. They do this before even looking at your application.
These sample Yale interview reports may be helpful.

@TooOld4School I was asking because one of my good friends applied and she had received hers too! But thank you
And if this is a thought of yours, let me put it to rest. 99% likely that every single person in your area being interviewed is such due to complete randomness – or proximity to other alumni. None of which has any bearing on nor indication of your eventual chances of being admitted.
I received an email for an interview a few hours ago, so it’s entirely possible to get your interview any time from now until… whenever alums are available. Good luck!
Just got mine today! So excited!!
Finished my interview an hour ago.
It went well! Interviewer had only my name and what high school I was going too, so I had to fill in the blanks.
From there we discussed her major, my extracurriculars, interesting parts about Yale. The only real tough question was my greatest challenge. There was never a “Why Yale” question, but I made sure to clearly communicate my answer in various sections of the interview. And at the end she made sure to note her openness to communication as well as ensure I have hopeful but realistic knowledge and expectations of my interview and the admissions process.
All in all, it was about 45 minutes or so.
Just received email for interview. Will be meeting this weekend:)
Have another scheduled Friday evening for another school so stressed but glad to get two out of the way.
@Fuzerabit I have my Yale interview tomorrow! I haven’t heard back from other schools but hopefully I will soon!! Good luck on yours:)
@prosquad1
Good luck to you first! Haha
Waiting to hear from 3 more schools but it seems like they will be soon. Had 3 emails this wkend alone to schedule interviews:)
I got the notification of a Yale interview today, but my interviewer wants me to travel 3 hours to the interview location 3 days from now. Because of the super late notice, I had already made a commitment to an obligation on Friday and can’t possibly attend the interview. How do I respectfully decline the interview without making it sound like I don’t have interest in the school? (I do have interest of course or I wouldn’t have applied). And I know that interviews aren’t required, as this is from Yale’s website: “Interviews are not required for our Admissions Committee to evaluate your application, and we do not disadvantage students who are not able to have an interview.” I’m just worried that it will sound like I don’t want the interview.
@Runners, Rather than declining to be interviewed, why not ask if you can skype? It seems a reasonable request and demonstrates interest.
@runners I wouldn’t let my own kid go drive 3 hrs one way to an interview. I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt but perhaps the interviewer does not know where you live? Many interviewers are conducting virtual interviews, myself included. If I were you, I’d respectfully ask for a virtual one – 1) your prior commitment and 2) the six hours it’d take you to meet with the alum and return home – both make it impossible.
Thank you for the responses @T26E4 and @cttwenty15, I will ask if it is possible to complete a virtual interview instead.
@prosquad1
How was your interview ?!?
Mine may not happen this weekend depending on how much snow we get
@Fuzerabit My interview was great! I had one for Georgetown a couple weeks ago and I felt a lot more comfortable around the person who interviewed me for Yale! Can honestly say it was worth the wait and definitely glad it happened! I also hope yours is not cancelled, if anything reschedule it!
@prosquad1
Oh I definitely am going to reschedule if the snow comes!
And I just saw I won a state scholarship for Horatio Alger so I’m psyched!!!
