Yale Likely Letters

Just to clarify, STEM is a rather recently popularized short hand for “science-y” type people. As in, the “government would like to encourage STEM majors as a matter of public policy” It’s a general term, not a Yale term, and has taken the place of “math and science” which, some felt, may have not clearly included important majors in the engineering/technology fields.

STEM= “Science, Technology, Engineering and Math”

edit: not positive that the T is technology, but it’s something along those lines…

My kid just got a Yale Likely Letter today. She got a very successful interview 2 weeks ago with a regional representative. He told my kid it was the best interview ever he have had.
They just talked about the ordinary things like a hobby, book and movie, etc.

^^Congrats! Is she STEM major? Care to share some key stats of hers? Thanks.

International students get LL’s too?

Our child was contacted for an interview with an alum; they met on M L King weekend. I gather that the interview went well, perhaps low key.

Last Thursday, an admissions officer called and explained (to the applicant, of course) about the likely letter. Quite unexpected. The letter arrived yesterday (Mon 2-3). Didn’t say much besides “outstanding application” and much info about Yale, perhaps tailored to the applicant, not sure.

The applicant has an excellent academic record (outstanding GPA at a top school, 5s on half a dozen APs, fairly strong SATs). I suspect that the teachers’ recommendations would be unusually strong. Excellent extracurricular activities and leadership, which (based on the admin officer’s brief remarks) may have made an impression thru two of the essays. Also, I am an alum.

It seems to me that this applicant could expect to get into at least one Ivy, though by no means certain and would not have predicted a likely letter. Nonetheless, this is surely a person who would thrive in an environment like Yale. So I’m thrilled and proud as a parent.

Good luck everyone!

^^Congrats! Do you think your kid’s LL was part of the “batch” Yale sent out to its high value STEM major applicants starting from late Jan? Did your kid apply to a STEM major?

I received a likely phone call too!

All you amazing people that have gotten likelies, did you all get phone calls before the actual letter arrived?

yeah. It was from an area code in LA, thought it was a prank call at first. Yale? Yeah, right :P

I got a phone call today!! :)

How long do they keep sending out likelies usually?

What is the definitive story on interviews? I been contacted and interviewed at all selective schools except Yale. I live a major metro area. …

Even if you live in a major metro area, remember interviewers are doing it in their own time and they have they own busy work, personal and family lives. They are swamped with interviewees, and may not get the chance to interview you all

What’s not to understand in what you’ve read so far Murph? You’re in an area where not enough interviewers have enough open slots. My area coordinator is BEGGING us to take on a few more due to the # of kids that couldn’t assigned initially. I can guarantee you there will be kids from my metro area that won’t get a call. That’s how it is, murph. Although difficult, try to stop reading things into it.

Does Yale conduct interviews in India??
Are Likely letters sent to international students??

Yes.

Don’t know. But why does it matter? If you’re awaiting one, that’s foolishly expended energy. 1% of applicants receive one. And 2/3 of that 1% are recruited athletes.

Did anyone get an interview in India?

T2 the thing is Harvard manages to interview ALL candidates and Princeton is finishing interviewing 800 applicants from the area (per alumni schools head) so what’s up with Yale?

Does anybody know what happens if you miss your call?
