Yale-NUS College Class of 2022

@ccauth Oh wow any chance we’re from the same country? haha! When did you submit your application? Maybe it will come in a couple of days. I think they send me interview invitation quite soon

hi everyone! just wondering did your interviewers personally send you an official Yale-NUS email to remind you guys to apply for financial aid after the interview?

@ariiiii Yes, mine did. But it was an official email that I think goes to everyone, they just sign it with your interviewers name. How did your interview go?

International Student here.
Wanted to get an idea of my chances at Yale-NUS

High School Graduate. Taking a gap year.
4.0 GPA (Unweighted) (86.2% aggregate score in final two years)
Took 6 subjects (1 optional) during senior year. (Pretty much all the subjects on offer from the school)
SAT Reasoning: 1440 (EBRW: 700; Maths: 740)
SAT Essay: 7/6/8 (Reading/Analysis/Writing)
Didnt take TOEFL because of English medium school background.

ECAs:
Debate: Participated in national and international debate tournaments.
Best speaker in school tournament.
Won 3rd best adjudicator in one international BP debate tournament.
Deputy Chief Adjudicator in 2017 Nationals.
Been working as a debate trainer and trained more than 300 students since May 2017.
Really interested in Yale-NUS Debate Society and its growth in recent years.

Event Management (Junior/Senior year): worked as senior executive in the school’s oldest running club. Organized a national level inter school/college project showcase exhibition with over 250 students two years straight.
Organized a cycle rally to raise around $3000 for a child suffering from acute meningitis and around $400 for organizations serving blind people in the country.
Also organized a talk show and a cleaning campaign. Worked as Editor In Chief of Club Magazine in senior year.

School Prefect:
Selected as House Captain in freshman year. Organized various intra-school events and hosted atleast 15 events in freshman and sophomore year.

Awards:
Student of the Year: Sophomore year (2015)

Internships/Work:

  1. Worked as an intern in national debate body for 4 months. Drafted event proposals and worked as a trainer and volunteer.
  1. Currently working as an Events Lead at an educational company working in Project based learning for 2500 students. Representing organization in an initiative led by Ministry of Science and Technology, National Science and Technology Academy, UNESCO and UNDP to organize a STEAM (Sci, Tech, Engineering, Arts, and Maths) Challenge for more than 500 students. Drafted entire preliminary documentation and leading outreach for the event. Wrote my essay about this experience in the educational company.

Wrote a supplement about learning how to ride a cycle and linked it with my interest in exploring new ideas during my undergrad years.
Special interest in the Global Affairs and PPE majors. However, applied as undecided.
I am concerned that my SATs might be a bump to my candidacy.

Applied on deadline day. Yale-NUS is my first choice college. Hoping for an interview!

Best Wishes to everyone!

@momentousmeerkat yeah that’s what i thought. I got my interview on the 22nd it lasted 40 mins in total but 30 mins was about me and 10 mins was me asking my interviewer questions. Questions I got include why yale nus, whats your intended major, why liberal arts, whats a book you’ve been reading, something about my debate career and some challenges I’ve faced as a leader, what I like about my community and what I’d like to change about my community. My interview went fine, I mean these types of interviews can’t really go wrong when you know the reasons behind why you do what you do. I will say I am a bit disappointed with the way it was carried out. I went in expecting a conversation, which it kind of was, but it turned out to be more of a q&a session if you know what I mean. The process felt rather rushed and I’m not sure if the questions dug deep enough for the full range of my personality to be displayed and for my values to be communicated. Maybe I feel this way because i wasn’t the person listening my answers and I always feel like there’s more to add. Nonetheless, it’s over and done with. Sorry for such a lengthy response :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey everyone! I am an international applicant from Southern California and I have been shortlisted for an R1 Skype interview. I received the invitation only two hours ago and I found that all three available dates were filled! Anyone have an idea how I should proceed? Did I screw up somehow?

Singapore student here
Applied for the January application (Closed on 15th Jan) and got my interview invite on 26th Jan!
Could anyone advice on interview tips and share what questions were asked during their interview?

Don’t mean to be rude /:
Were you perhaps able to scroll the calender to the month of February? @ElGuiri

When I scroll to the next month it does not display any scheduled dates  For the Singapore local interviews I see there are 6 dates available. For international applicants, though, they only have slots for the last three days of January- all of which are filled.

My bad /: had to ask
You should email them! I’m sure it’s just a mistake on their part (: You’ll definitely get the interview ((: all the best!

Hope I’m not spamming, here’s a compilation of the interview questions I found from the previous threads and this current chat.

Having the interview in 36hrs (’: nervous
If anyone has more interview questions that came up do share with the rest of us!

Thank you for your advice! I just sent the admissions office an email. Good luck to you too!

My interviewer and I started by briefly talking about the weather (because SG has been so cold/wet lately). I’m not from Singapore, but I’m pretty up-to-date on current events so small talk about the weather was a good icebreaker at first.

Is Yale-NUS still sending the interview invites? I applied on Jan 15. International. South Asian. Freaking a little :-/

@ElGuiri I also had a similar issue when I needed to schedule! I emailed them and then they added more dates. Additionally, as the week goes on, they naturally opened up more slots  (I had prior conflicts with the original dates that were available). I had my interview almost a week ago and it went smoothly

@RayLiSingapore
Haha basically summed up common questions but I wasn’t asked all of these. I was asked one harder question that is not on your list (I’m not going to share it because I believe it should be an unplanned answer :). You can PM me after you’re done if you’d like to know :D). It was half conversational half Q&A, but I think I also lucked out because I could relate to my interviewer pretty well (both of us were musicians and loved food). I’ll just say though others may have asked the following questions, I was not asked about my favourite book, a course in the uni (because this was a question on my Yale app that got forwarded to YNC), or any adjectives. I think I covered some parts of these topics in my responses to other questions that the interview didn’t ask me, so that was pretty cool

@primenumber I just got my interview invitation today, even though I sent my application in early (Jan 2)

To everyone else, should I be worried that I got the invitation late?

@AhmedAY Congrats! I really don’t think you should be worried, probably means there were more people in your applicant pool.

I was wondering too if there are more invites being sent out in the coming weeks? Do they review the applications in some designated order? Or do the more qualified receive invites earlier? Anxiously waiting…

I love food too, though I’m not a musician. Let’s get awesome food together when we both get in (:

Oh man now you’re re making me nervous xD I’m prepared for the common questions but slightly afraid there’ll be some hardball questions, it’s in 5hrs! Will message you after I guess!

Hopefully I get an interviewer that I can connect with d:
