I applied restrictive early action to Yale and ended up sending my application to Yale NUS as well. Today I got an invitation to an interview, but with everything I read that they are pretty selective with people they interview. I wanted to know tips and maybe to get an idea of how good this offer to an interview is (if I should be confident about it).
Also, I didn’t write the supplemental essay of Why Yale-NUS. Do you think it will make this big of a difference if I write it?
Hey, I’m in the same situation. I applied kind of just cus and got the interview. I didn’t even send my sat scores or the additional supplement
If it has not passed the deadline, you should probably think about, write, and/or submit the “Why Yale-NUS” essay before your interview.
It would be a very reasonable interview question to ask, Why are you interested in going to school in Singapore? At Yale-NUS? Or in Asia? You have to prepare an answer for your interview anyway–might as well think through it now offline. (Don’t you also want to know before you attend?)
From their website: it seems like all materials you sent to Yale via the Common App application will also be received by Yale-NUS. (So this may include your self-reported test scores.)
I honestly think for the right person, it is a very valuable opportunity to study, in Asia, in a liberal arts college setting. (However, you should also look up online articles from, e.g., the Yale Daily News and Yale Alum Magazine.)
Also, check out the curriculums (majors and minors), faculties, school & class sizes, etc. It could also be useful to do some research on Singapore–it’s a different country from the US, and has its own set of culture and laws, for example. Good luck with your interviews!

I’m in the same situation too! I didn’t send in official test scores…neither did I submit the why Yale-NUS essay.
Do you know how selective they are with the interview?
Also, can I know how your interviews went?
Had the interviewers read your applications?
@HYPSM2024 I submitted the why Yale NUS essay kinda late. I had the interview about a month ago and it honestly went really well. She read my application and asked me specific questions about my app. It was through zoom. Good luck!
Thanks! @soccergirl2020 I got the interview request suprisingly late! (About last week)
Are they still sending interview requests? My friend got one last month but I didn’t and I’m kinda worried!
Since Yale-NUS has a Round 2 application deadline of March 20,
I would keep an open mind and stay positive at this point.
Good Luck to Everyone!
Thank you guys I appreciate

I totally forgot about this thread, but I will comment anyway for future applicants. I submitted my Yale application on 11/1 and got the interview invite on the 11/14. the interview went ok, the interviewer read my application so he asked a lot of really specific questions, which I found hard to answer overall. I did a lot of interviews in the RD round for other schools and I can say this interview wasn’t great, but wasn’t bad either. I decided to submit the why Yale-NUS essay, so I did in January 9. I have also submitted official scores reports on the beginning of January as well. I received an email in the end of January asking a really specific thing of my financial aid application (I basically made a mistake on the app, but you had to look close to realize it). I explained what happened and everything, but didn’t hear from them anymore. honestly, I am really interested in attending Yale-NUS after all. even though I didn’t know a lot about the school at the time I applied, now I can really see myself there and feel like I fit there. I stayed awake until 4 AM today thinking decisions would be out, unfortunately they were not. I think they will on Tuesday or Wednesday however. I am really anxious, so that’s probably why I am writing this. Hoping you all get in, and thanks a lot to those of you who helped me here.
For the next classes, I think that the best way to prepare for the interview is to do a lot of research. You should go deep into the reasons you would like to attend Yale-NUS, talk about specific classes or programs that you are interested there and why you can see yourself studying there. moreover, I would recommend that you go over your application as a whole, remember what you write about ECs, your life in general or even perspectives you wrote about on essays. I know that a lot of people didn’t have interviewers that read their application, but some of us did. the point is that usually the person that is interviewing you doesn’t know you at all, so you are always explaining and kinda creating the person’s idea about you. it is strange when the person already has a image of you and what you do, because they will always ask really specific thing to you that sometimes you didn’t even realize for yourself. I think going over your app would help even if your interviewer didn’t read about you, because you’d have a more clear idea about everything you did and represented in your app. good luck to you all!!!
my decision just came out, I was waitlisted. my hopes were kind of high due to the financial aid email and I am kind of disappointed now. I am wondering if that’s because of financial aid now.
Hi @rh1616
Sorry to hear about the outcome. I hope you will come off the list, or land at another school you also like. Also, thanks for sharing your experience. It would be helpful to future applicants. Take care.
Hi! I got in! Still don’t think I’ll go because being international, I would have to work in Singapore for three years after graduation. I love Singapore, but living there for 7 years doesn’t really appeal to me.
@soccergirl2020 may i ask what your stats are? and what country are you from? thanks!
