Yale-NUS interview round 1

If the interview I signed up for is at 9 am, is that in Singapore time? Thus making the time of my interview 8 pm EST?

I know that the admissions processes are different, but I’m still musing about the possibility of a strong app at NUS. If admissions at NUS think your app is good enough to warrant an interview, wouldn’t that bode slightly well for Yale itself? Of course, no correspondence happens between the two, but…

Yeah >_<

I don’t think a strong app at NUS is necessarily an indicator for acceptance at Yale, but it does mean that your application is, well, strong. So I think it means you definitely have a chance at Yale, and are a competitive applicant for any college you apply to. But Yale gets so many applications per year that even some competitive applicants have to be denied, simply because of the makeup of the class they’re going for. It definitely feels good to have know at least one college is interested in your app though  haha

Oops, I guess I’m just too nervous about the decision so when I typed the date I was still thinking about December ;)

speckle8, that’s pretty much what I thought. And don’t we wish that an NUS interview invite meant a guarantee in acceptance to Yale… Haha. Wishful thinking, I suppose.

Would anyone here choose Yale-Nus over Yale?

Has anyone gotten contacted that they are NOT moving on for Yale-NUS? I haven’t been contacted for an interview so I’m wondering if it’s more of a silent you’re not moving on, or if they’re going to go all the way until Dec 10 for interviews and my application has not been reviewed yet.

Yale-NUS might even be more selective because they’re only matriculating 150 students this year out of, like, the whole world. Singapore kind of scares me though, they use caning as a punishment for a variety of crimes (even relatively minor ones) and they even outlawed chewing gum…

Anybody interview with Austin Shiner?

entomom, I will be tomorrow. Why?

He’s a friend of my D1, they graduated the same year. He’s a great guy, you’ll have fun talking to him.

If you want to get him going, just mention food. He’s a true foodie, but not the snobby type, he loves to eat the street food of wherever he travels, check out this blog entry (on the Y-NUS site, so within the TOS):

[Photoblog: A Year in the Life of Dinnertime with Filipinos The Liberal Arts in Singapore](http://yalenusblog.com/2012/11/06/photoblog-a-year-in-the-life-of-dinnertime-with-filipinos/)

Hmmm, very interesting. I will keep this in mind for my interview tomorrow. Thanks, entomom!

CantConcentrate, I’m hoping for the same thing! I was shortlisted for a Yale NUS interview and I’m hoping that foreshadows at least a Yale deferment… Especially because I ultimately decided Singapore wasn’t for me and declined the interview. Guess I’ll just have to wait & see next week!

chaquefois, yay for optimism! But I really sincerely think that that is the case.

nooooooooooo I was stuck in traffic and not able to make it to my skype interview! literally so mad at myself. We’re trying to reschedule; hopefully we can (even though admissions decisions are in less than a week…)
wah

Best of luck to you, speckle8!

This site is helpful: [Yale-NUS College | Yale College Admissions](http://admissions.yale.edu/yale-nus)

Can anyone give me a comprehensive overview of Yale-NUS, and the interview and admissions process?

How do you get “shortlisted” for an interview? Did you apply SCEA? Or did you submit RD already?

bobbypage, Yale-NUS is a branch of Yale in Singapore. The admissions processes at the two institutions are not connected. Information about your questions can be found on the Yale-NUS website: [Yale-NUS College](http://www.yale-nus.edu.sg/index.php)

Yale-NUS features 3 rounds of admissions. Round 1 is the one that is currently ongoing review. Round 2’s deadline is January 1st. Round 3’s deadline is later in 2013.

"Once you’ve completed your application, checked through all sections, and clicked “Submit”, you can sit back, take a breather, and wait to hear back from us!

If you applied in Round 1, you will hear back from us either on or before 15 Dec 2012.
If you applied in Round 2, you will hear back from us either on or before 31 Mar 2013.
If you applied in Round 3, you will hear back from us either on or before 15 May 2013.
During this period, the Admissions team will be focusing on reading applications and conducting interviews, and we may not be able to respond to your queries as quickly as we would like. We encourage you to make full use of your application portal to check on the status of your application, see whether your teachers have submitted their letters of recommendation for you, and view the eventual admissions decision on your application. Please also check your email address regularly as we will send you an email if we need additional information from you."

"The interview is a key part of the admissions process at Yale-NUS and is both evaluative and informative. The interview is a chance for you to share further information about yourself and is also a good opportunity for you to ask any questions you have about the College. If you receive an interview request by email, please log-in to the application portal to book your interview date/time as soon as possible.

Will every applicant be interviewed?
Due to the volume of applications received, we are only able to offer interviews to shortlisted applicants. After you have submitted your complete application to Yale-NUS, your application will be read by a member of the Admissions team and we will get in touch with you if we feel that you might be a good fit for Yale-NUS. Once you are offered an interview, it becomes a required part of the application process to the College.

For shortlisted candidates applying from within Singapore…
If you are schooled or reside in Singapore during the academic year, we require an in-person interview on or near the Yale-NUS campus. Please register for an interview slot online via your applicant status page. The tentative interview periods for shortlisted applicants are:

• Round 1: Nov 19-December 10
• Round 2: Jan 28- March 1
• Round 3: April 15-April 26"

Is it safe to assume I was rejected, or was there a possibility I was deferred?

I’m thinking only shortlisted candidates who did not make it this round are deferred just because of limited spots.
